When should employer release separation letter?

Funding ended for a job I worked last SUMMER. The employer never gave me a separation letter. I was unemployed 2 months and went to another department as a new hire in the company. Five months later I was contacted another department saying they didn’t know I was terminated from that first department, because they held on to all the stuff I had to turn in my last day.

Now, I’m being told that funding for me department is ending but no specifics yet.

Apparently, there is a history of not letting people know on the front end that they really only need people to spend up the money they have.

i don’t want to have to wait another 3 months for my termination letter.

In my state, it is the LAW that a SERVICE LETTER be given to the employee on the date of termination. The service letter is the legal name for what you are describing. Most states require the letter but not all of them require it to be given on the day of termination.. I think a little bit of googling will help you to find the answer. But use the term service letter to find the information that you need for your state

Thanks . In my state it’s called SEPARATION.
