I work at a local supermarket and get 2-3 shifts per week. I am part-time but I enjoy working there and making the money I do. Unfortunately, I just received concert tickets that conflict with one of my shifts. I tried to take the day off but the store isn't allowing anyone to take days off around Thanksgiving. What should I do?

    Can you check with your team mates to see if anyone will change shifts with you? You might have to take an extra shift (like a 2 for 1 deal) especially if the time you want is a premium spot.

    You might want to see if someone is willing to swap with you...that said, this may unfortunately be a life lesson for you. Some jobs have blackout dates where the only excuse for taking time off when schedule is that you died. Yes, that may be a slight exaggeration...but I do feel the pain of your predicament. My husband has certain dates around the year where if he is scheduled, he absolutely cannot take off (and those are usually the holidays).

    You risk you job or lose your tickets. You will need to choose unfortunately.

    Did you know about the black out period prior? Did it fall outside the range of when they accept days off requests? If yes to either of those. I would have suggested you to not accept tickets until you confirmed you could go. Did you try to switch shifts?

    It's unfortunate in retail there is not a lot of flexibility in time off. I would suggest before you buy tickets or put down deposits, to ask off first, before you invest money. If someone could switch with you, that would be wonderful, but if not, you may have to go to the next event another time.

    Try to trade for an opening shift and go to concert after work. If nobody wants to trade, you could try offering people extra money out of pocket to cover for you.
