I’m a big advocate of networking since other than my first two jobs out of school have all been the direct or indirect result of a connection. But as I explained to a friend who asked me to help him find a job at my entertainment industry company, not only did I know someone but they knew that I had the relevant experience. And that makes the difference!

Great connection. It's a small world. Networking can be so powerful.

There's a huge difference between "Help find me a job" and "I'd love to learn more about your career trajectory and the steps you took to get to where you are now."

In my 35 year career, I have yet to get a job through "networking". Every single place I've been was through my own efforts. I have a robust network on linkedin, but the whole make sure you network because it will help you land your next role has never been the case for me.

I have received 80% of my job offers over a 45 years career have been via my network.

I have the opposite problem where I do have the relevant experience but networking has been a genuine bust: ranging from not getting the interview to having some of the worst professional experiences I've had.

I don't discount networking, but like with everything else, it takes a LOT of work and really only benefits a specific subset of people/it's genuine luck.
