Email sent by a client while I was on vacation and not responded to (4/27):

While on I was on vacation a client sent an email addressed to the owner of the company, me and a coworker requesting information. Owner responded: "Sure XXX. Will check to see what we show and be back to you. From XXX". My OOO message was on.

I returned from vaca 5/1 and do not see the owner or my coworker responded to the client We have a staff meeting next week. I will ask if they responded to the client's email... or maybe I shouldnt??

If the answer is "ohhhh, we forgot" ...(coworker is a bit of a slacker and she alwayyyysss gives this guy "a pass".)

Then if she (the owner) asks me to reply to the client, What would you say to her?

Should I state in the email to the client " Sorry for the delay XXX, I was on vaca" here is the information you requested".

PS I dont want to look like the slacker.... and I dont want to throw them under the bus.... But .........................

    Tell the truth.

"My apologies no one responded sooner; I was out of the office and there was an apparent communication gap in my absence.

The answer to your inquiry is...."

Customer waited and might be aggravated; hopefully now that you are back--

"Communication Gap" isn't pointing fingers. If your colleagues ask, tell them it's been resolved.

I don’t agree with this response.
Stating the obvious, there was a communication gap, is airing the organization’s dirty laundry. You can achieve the same outcome without this phrase. “ I just returned from vacation and am responding.”

We all have separate approaches to get to the same end. Point is to be classy.

    Appreciate your input... makes sense!

Absolutely. Pose the following to the client I saw that "owner responded to your email while I was on vacation but wanted to circle back to see you needed anything further from us". Have a great rest of your week.

Why wait until next week? Is there a rule that your scheduled meetings are the only time you're allowed to talk to your boss?

No there is no rule....but easier to get her attention at our weekly meeting.. .no disruptions. Discussed with her...she nor my associate responded to the email. As suggested by another member in our community I stated ... "XXXXX responded to your email while I was on vacation but wanted to circle back to provide the requested information" - now he knows I am not the "slacker" :)
