Venting and Feeling Defeated...

Venting and Feeling Defeated...

I applied to and interviewed for an internal position two weeks ago. I was REALLY excited about this role, it would have tapped into my skills, helped me build my career, and just really seemed like it would be a great fit. I was told they would follow up to schedule another interview the following week (last week).

After hearing nothing all week, (the interview would have been with a Csuite executive, so I am trying to be patient and understanding about schedules with little to no options for interviews) this morning I reached out to the recruiter, just asking for an update. I have not received a response from the recruiter yet, but was searching for other possible opportunities that may be worth looking into, and saw that they've reposted the position as of last Wednesday. I am not even sure how I feel, but it ranks up there with defeated, disappointed, and a bit frustrated.

Does this mean I should abandon hope of that second interview? I really enjoy my current role (most days, but that's everyone, right?), but I also didn't realize how much of me was hoping for this opportunity to pan out.

Insist on getting confirmation that you are not considered a viable candidate.

First of all, you are jumping to conclusions. Secondly, you are making the whole process about you when the chances are high that it has nothing to do with you.

We repost positions all the time for lots of different reasons. We didn't get enough candidates and HR wants us to interview at least 3, an admin renewed the listing because the requisition is still open, sometimes a position is reposted until the actual start date of a new hire because people back out of positions all the time.

Take a breath and a step back. Follow up with your contact once a week until you get a response. I've had critical information for a C-suite holder and the earliest available 15-minute slot was at 7 am two weeks later. Some of them are crazy-busy and scheduled back to back all day, every day.

It's not great to go all-in before you get and accept an offer, but we've all had those interviews where it felt like everything just clicked. Sometimes they pan out, and sometimes they don't. If this doesn't end up being one of those that pans out for you, you've still got some positives.

    1) You saw new career growth areas that you didn't even consider previously. That may give you some ideas for professional growth that you can start exploring from your current position.

    2) You may be able to think of a way your current role can change/grow to encompass more of the things that excited you about the posted position. I've modified my own job descriptions and those of my staff over the years (with at least raises even when I can't justify promotions) so that we're all doing more of what we enjoy the most.

    3) If you don't have any support or opportunity where you are, you'll have more clarity about what you need to pursue in the future (internally or externally).

    Best of luck!

Don't jump to conclusions yet. I worked for a company that required internal positions to be posted internally at least a week before they were posted publicly. That the position has been reposted, may only mean they want to bring in a few outside people for consideration as well. You probably have a better chance, as you are already well-versed in the company's culture and how they do business.

Dont fret friend!! Use this as a learning opportunity. Ask them for feedback. And use this as a lesson and stepping stone to prepare for whats next! Please dont give up! There will be other opportunities.
