articles like the below in the link always shock me with disbelief as I hear only about who can’t get jobs after many months and how many people are on unemployment, so where in the name of anything are they getting this data from as I don’t see it.

I think we are also transitioning into a different type of work environment that needs both skills, know how and emotional intelligence in a way we did not before.

    Agree, something isn't adding up.

I live in Georgia, and this article noted that unemployment went up here, and said

"The jobless rate increased from a year earlier in 28 states, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday. Three states saw their unemployment decrease, while 19 states and the District of Columbia saw little change."

So over half of the states in the US saw increases in unemployment when compared to last year. And in the news, More layoffs with big companies are announced, ie Amazon recently, and yet cnbc is going to say it's on the Up and up...

I saw this same report on the news this morning and was shocked and confused. More and more layoffs are being announced but, we're constantly being told that unemployment numbers are decreasing. Something doesn't make sense at all. The numbers aren't adding up.

I think the hiring must be industry specific and geographically situated not where we are

I mean, it does give a breakdown: health care, government, service, construction, etc.

No one ever explains what these types of reports actually represent

My understanding from this story is that most jobs are from healthcare, government, leisure & hospitality and construction. A step further: Leisure & hospitality, according to government definition, includes service-providing industries, such as spectator sports, performing arts, museums, etc. I may be wrong so do your own research, yet my loose interpretation of this means "servers" or even retail-type positions. There's nothing wrong with this work, yet these are not the type of jobs most who come to this forum are looking for when asking for advice.

This is just an educated guess, I'm not certain, but aren't they using data based on people on unemployment benefits. So, if people have not found full-time work for too long or are ineligible for unemployment for reasons other than finding work in their field, would they not get counted as unemployed? Also, these numbers don't account for underemployment I believe. So if someone is in the job search for a year and finds part-time or less sustainable forms of income to simply survive, they could be considered "employed" but they are not making enough to pay their bills..

The numbers don't factor in anyone who no longer receives unemployment benefits but remains unemployed, they also don't factor in the underemployed, housewives, disabled, etc. Basic economics, 101- very undermining system!
