I have been out of work for 1 year now.

I have been out of work for 1 year now. This is after leveraging my skills successfully into another field. My first field was in advertising sales which I loved but since covid have not been able to secure a position in that industry. I truly believe its is because I am in my upper 40's. I read books, networked and clawed my way into the nonprofit space (Development) but due to budget cuts my most recent position was eliminated. I am finding that while my skills are very transferable, I cant seem to land another position either in the for profit or nonprofit sector. In my most recent interview I was told I was over qualified. I have over 15 years experience and my strengths are: New Business Development, Marketing Strategy, Sales and Customer Relationship Management. I have reached out to linked in connections, head hunters, applied to job listings, etc... I just don't know what else to do. In my last position, a colleague asked: Where do all the women go? She was specifically asking about those in Advertising of a certain age, and I joked at that time... "well you are looking at one". It makes me sick that after a certain age (not even 50 yet) that it is incredibly difficult to land a job. I personally have gotten my RE Lic , actively worked in that area as well, but it was not to my liking. I know from experience that it is were a lot of Sales professionals land (especially from Adv Industry) find themselves. My question is if you don't want to start your own business , which is the answer for a lot of women, where can you go if you still want to work and feel valued?

I am in the same boat, I will be 1 year out of work this June. I have applied so much that I have lost hope. I have had interviews after interviews some going even deep in to the 3rd interview then I get the sorry, we went with the other candidate. I have lost all hope honestly. I have been working for the last 25 yrs and I am in my 50's and I believe ageism is playing a big part in all of this. I am honestly sad and I am worried I am going to exhaust all my savings and then what? I am exhausted. Sorry for my rant but I wanted to let you know you are not alone.

Thank you. I completely understand. It’s so hard.

This is excellent advice! I would add to avoid talking about "15 years of experience" or "seasoned professional" or other phrases that age us. Agree with focusing on skills and quantifiable "wins".

Experience older than 10 years is considered obsolete - if you want to include jobs on your resume that are beyond the 10 year mark because they are relevant to your job search, there's no need to go into detail with bullet points. List them in a section titled "Additional Experience" or "Relevant Experience", Listing the name of the company and your title only.
