How do I negotiate salary with a huge company that has low-balled me?

having looked at comparable roles and companies I am being offered a salary at the low end of the scale. I think with my skills, experience and looking at the salary range I would be entitled to a 10% - 20% increase.

well, ask for 15% more as a compromise and explain "why". you wont get it if you don't ask.

So I understand doing research on comparable roles and companies. But what other companies are paying typically doesn't really matter that much. What matters is what is the salary range and target salary at the company you are interviewing with and how does the hiring manager feels your experience fits with what they're looking for and with others doing the same or similar job.

Did you have compensation discussions throughout the interview process? Did they say they were looking to pay X amount and then came back with a lower offer?

When you say "looking at the salary range I would be entitled" - are you talking about the salary range in that company?

That's exactly what you say - name your specific skills you believe will benefit the role and how it will elevate the job and contribute to their success.

In a larger entity the salaries they generally offer you are based upon your level and years of experience, your educational background and how you fit into the current population across that similar discipline and other teams that align. For many F100 companies there is also a comp committee that must approve the offers before they go out so that there is not internal compression and also that your hiring does not in any way mess up the current structure and pay arrangements.

So to find out where you might fit in I would check salary.com and also blind and glassdoor for any salary information that you can gather from that companies information. The bigger the company especially in tech the more likely the info is out there in the public domain. When you get your offer in writing also find out when and how the do reviews and promotions. Are they tied together? and a rough range of how they do it. For example if they give each manager a set pool to use then only the top performers will get an increase. Also ask about spot bonuses and stock options. They can be a significant part of your overall rewards program.

I am sure you can potentially negotiate for a higher rate for what you think you are worth, they may disagree, but they may decide they can only pay you what they have offered and then you will have to decide if you want to take it as is or walk away.
