Thoughts?- I applied to a role a few days ago, and received a call on Saturday afternoon from someone at the company. She introduced herself but spoke to me as though it was the only job I applied to. She asked me a few questions (while I was in the supermarket) and then inquired where I lived. Then she remarked "Oh?" and went on about how far away the job is. (It's less than an hour, and I was aware of the location and had applied to it bc I was willing to commute.) I added that it wasn't too far for me but if that's how she felt.....She wined on about it for some time and then left awkward quiet gaps. Finally she stated that she'd have to speak to the owner about it. Geesh! An able-bodied being who is willing to work hard and THEY are deciding if the commute is too much for me?!

That sounds like red flag city. I know it is hard to accept when you really need a job, but this sounds like dodging a bullet!

Thanks, couldn't' agree more. My gut was telling me "run!!" before I even hung up the phone!

Agree with other folks on the red flags. It sounds like people have quit because of the commute and they can't see past that. If you are truly interested framing it as "yes, I have commuted X distance in prior roles and have used the time for...(books, podcasts...)" is a positive framing.

I strongly suggest to never respond to where you live on the phone to a company with specifics. Especially if they ask in the first call then their concern is more about they projecting you want to commute vs your qualifications for the job. Best to respond with I live within 15 minute drive from your offices or something simple like that. When I coach people I tell them to remove their location completely from the resume so that they don't get eliminated for not fitting the expectations of where the company wants you to live. That is your personal business. If you think you have been eliminated for this reason contact the owner or head of the company and stake a claim again of interest. If they still reject you then you dodged a bullet because they don't care then about quality of hire. Good luck in your search.
