Passively looking for a new job, advise please!

Passively looking for a new job, advise please!

I am looking for higher salary with the same title. I have stayed at this company 5 years because I like the people and flexibility to work hybrid (I have young children), but I know I am worth more. So, in no hurry, I am looking for a new job with higher pay. Advice to get started! It's been so long since the job hunt, which I find no fun. I know I likely need start with an updated resume. What is the best way to do that? My last resume I typed by hand on word processor. What's the latest? And what do you recommend I do subsequently? Contact recruiters? Surf job boards and apply? All the wisdom and information are appreciated, thank you!

I suggest watching videos of Jeff Su on Youtube. He gives advice about resumes and job search in general. Also, start networking via LinkedIn or other events if possible. :)

You can try websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Dice.com. I would have recommended WomenWhoCode but the organization is defunct now.

Good luck on your job search!

Start applying TODAY! It is taking many months to land a job these days. Plus, the salaries are dropping not increasing! I've seen salaries for jobs at what they were 10-12 years ago but they want even more experience. It's an employer's market right now so if you are thinking of making a move sometime in the next year, just start looking now. You can always decline an offer if you decide you aren't ready to move. But this will also give you an idea of how long it will take. I've gone months without even getting an interview for roles I could do in my sleep! So, don't put it off. It will take longer than you think to land a new role especially one that pays decent. Good luck.

have you tried asking for a pay rise? It might be that you've slipped below the standard salary for the position, and they'd rather give it to you rather than some newbie who will take 6 months or more to get fully up to speed

I've asked. I asked on my last annual review, which I did get, although not as much as I tried for. I tried again when another position in the company became available, which is essentially my job as well, but I was told that I did not have enough experience for the pay I was asking for. I have three years. So not many years, but many postings I see for similar positions ask for minimum three years experience. I also want to add that staying with the company would be my wish! I have a busy home life and I have a good handle on balancing the two, which is why I am in not in a hurry, but I think it would be good for me to look for other opportunities that are out there in the world.

I’ve been enjoying TealHQ to update my resume recently. It’s free and allows you to easily customize your resume for different roles/focus areas.

There are a few steps to creating a successful job search. It does start with making sure your marketing materials are in good shape: your resume and LinkedIn profile. After that you will reach out to recruiters, apply to jobs and more but first make sure you have created the documents that reflect where you have been and where you want to go next.

    Good Morning,

Congratulations on acknowledging your worth, and realizing that you need to be proactive in taking your career to "the next level" . . .

A resume revision, as you mentioned, is necessary . . . One which highlights your skills and "value add" beyond the official job description.

Preparation for behavioral interviews, and making sure that you are skilled in, or comfortable utilizing the latest technologies/software used in your field is also essential.

Consider scheduling a complimentary consulting session with me via Zoom. My company has provided career coaching, workforce development, and leadership training for organizations and individuals for 20 years.

    You've got this!
