I'm not sure the approach you're taking but applying to jobs on job boards you're competing against hundreds of other candidates and depending on when you applied, the number of other applicants and variety of other factors, your resume may not even be seen. Having some sort of connection point will increase your chances of getting your resume in front of someone which will then improve your chances of landing phone screens and interviews. Good luck!

Actually the job market is improving somewhat depending on the level you are looking at as well as your network. Like the poster below points out, job boards are the keast productive for job offers.

Where? Because I don't see it improving at all.

Well I'm in southern California and my long term unemployed friends are now employed. One is in marketing and the other two are in corporate planning type roles. All three received offers in the past 6 months so it seems something is happening. My brother in Buffalo NY just got a finance job and my former neighbor move yo Utah for a new job in commercial real estate management. I judge the market on what I see in my own life. These folks I mentioned above are in addition to those I know recently entering into the interview process . One in Media in NC and another in business administration AZ who recently decided to reenter the job market after raising her kids for a few years. So personally I feel a shift happening.

There are some fake jobs out there are there where someone is simply mining your personal information. There are also real jobs that have hundreds if not thousands of applicants, so even if your resume is decent, unless your qualifications are truly exceptional, you may not be considered. Your best bet is to make personal connections. Attend job fairs and try to contact a real live person at the company you're applying to. Depending on the industry, also consider working for a temporary service. Sometimes a permanent job offer can come from that, and even if not, it at least provides you with some money coming in and some additional experience.

That happened to me. I initially assisted as an office temp at a Worker's Comp insurance company one summer (I'm a teacher). They were pleased with my work and I ended up working for them for several subsequent summers. It doesn't always happen and you might not even be allowed to take a permanent job right away depending on temp agency rules, but some money is better than no money and some chance is better than no chance. Also, simply having a job makes it easier to get a job elsewhere, and working for a temping agency is a job! Take a "right now" job while you look for a job that's truly right for you.
