Looking for some advice… I have been with my company 4+ years and am in middle management. I am really overwhelmed and feeling burned out from constant change in my department and our processes.

In the last year, I had a new boss, new team, new technology, dealt with HR for issues with a couple of direct reports (lack of respect for hierarchy and ability to do the job and another employee who inappropriately used substances while on the job), and feeling like I’m always “on.” I returned from maternity to having the same title as my direct reports which led a lot of feelings of being disrespected. The daily/weekly process changes are also a lot to keep up with. I am all for process efficiencies, but you have to balance it with to some stability. I am losing my mind (internally)…. I do my best to keep it together and be professional. I have poured my time into my job and now want to set work/life boundaries for my sanity. I dread going to work every day and now have had headaches the last 4 weeks.

If you were my mentor, what’s your advice?

Boy, you’re juggling a lot. I would say the first thing to do is make sure your self care is a priority. As moms, we tend to put ourselves last. In your place, I would get on a regular therapy schedule to make sure I have all the tools to manage stress and work-life balance effectively. It’s a team sport. From there, you can make more informed and strategic career and life decisions. Good luck!

You cannot control the actions or feelings of others no matter how much you’d like to. Focus on what’s in your control — your assignments and your responsibilities. If it’s out of your control, stop worrying about it. It sounds selfish because it is. I always remind myself if I died today, they’d replace me tomorrow. The work would not stop. Don’t waste good health on what’s out of your control.

You're still in reaction mode. When you can, create some time/space for you to pause and then reflect.

What do you need in the job? What do you like? What do you want to let go? Do you need hierarchy? (and yes, there's more of a shift away from hierarchy org charts, yet there needs to be an understanding of who makes the final decision/ takes the responsibility). Do you want more flexibility -for your family or readjusting from maternity leave? If you were on leave, did your team move on without you?

If there are people or resources at work to determine answers to some of your questions, get them.

Curious why you all have the same titles. (get that answered by HR). If you like the answer, start pivoting. If you don't like the answer then quiet quit and look for a new job. (Another consideration- esp if it's a big company--can you move to a new department. Sometimes a fresh start just helps).

If your sanity is taking the hit, shore up supports (friends, family, hobbies, spirituality, therapy, etc.).

You deserve to be in a healthy state of mind and body.

    Seek that.

    Good luck.
