Have you ever been baited and switched on a job interview?

I applied on LinkedIn for a job which I went to the actual website to check if the job was legit to make sure as I always try to with anything I apply to. I was able to get a response and invited to an interview for a week later. The day prior to the interview, I receive a message asking if I can apply to the job I’m being interviewed along with a link to their open roles page to another job description with a different title for 1/3 less pay for by the same person who scheduled tomorrow’s interview. So basically they wanted me to APPLY to a different job that I was to be interviewing for TOMORROW?? When I asked what the reason was just told the one on the website is the official one and the only one they had. Which was a lie because I checked the page prior to applying and the other listing wasn’t there at all but was still on LinkedIn but not taking applicants. Seems super shady to me and gut told me to cancel. So I did. Has anyone else had something this ODD?

Sounds like a scam or extremely disorganized place.
No legjt firm plays these games out of the gate

It’s a legit place and know where it is, all the names and email addresses matched up to real people.
When I checked the Glassdoor reviews they were NOT good and that they have problems with sexual harassment despite being ‘inclusive.’ They had the audacity to send me a message to say I was confused and understand if I didn’t want to apply at the current requirements or pay. Not a place anyone would want to work especially NOT an expensive college!

    They said you were confused???!

Good grief! Yea, you are doing the right thing by walking!

I stand corrected :) Legitimatacy and decency do not always align, sadly. Unfortunately, it's a RARE occurrence if they do--

Between what you said here and replied to the other poster about the Glassdoor rating, why are you still interested? They sound very disorganized and toxic to me. If you know someone who works there and trust them, bounce your experience off them to see their take on what happened to you. They may have completely different experiences or reasons for what is happening, and you would be hearing it from an insider.

OH I’m NOT interested after that nonsense for sure! I hoped that they would have been honest and clarified the issue but instead said I was confused. Just that Glassdoor rating confirmed their disfunction and toxicity. Apparently they have issues with sexual harassment too which seems odd for someplace of their nature. The person contacting me would be the person I’d be reporting to so I don’t think I’d want to work in their department as well. My BF lives near the college so I know it’s a real place. I just don’t know anyone there and neither does he.

Often companies have to post roles that are not open to satisfy filing work VISA's for current employees during their green card or H1-B process. They generally do not share this with the outside world and if you have less experience than the incumbent you are not considered. Also they might have done it as well to satisfy an internal posting where someone is getting promoted and they want internal and external postings to show that in good faith they considered all possible choices, this too means outside folks don't get considered. I know this is not what you hoped to hear but it is definitely not about you. If you choose to continue in the path with them take it as an informational interview to find out about the company, do prepare questions about organizational structure, promotional opportunities and career paths. Those will be telling about how they move folks around. If it is a good company and you want in, perhaps consider the role as a step in only if there is room to grow. Good luck.
