How to handle a short-term position that you don't want to remove from LinkedIn but not list at the forefront of your profile?

Backstory, I moved to a new location after years of director roles in other cities. I accepted a manager role as I needed a paycheck and to be able to pay off my bills before focusing on finding a more senior position.

The manager role required so many hours and late events that I was left without the opportunity to interview. I was working from 7 AM so I could find time to meet before work and often found myself without a lunch break. After paying off my debt & saving money, I left the position recently to focus on finding a senior position. My concern is that I'm trying to move into a SR Director or VP position when I have a short stint as a manager a my last role on LinkedIn.

I organized my resume so that it tells my career story but I'm having trouble with LinkedIn's chronological order. I don't want to remove the role as I found this area is loyal to local companies and it shows experience here while I'm noticing I'm being quickly dismissed after viewing my last role on LinkedIn.

Sadly, I'm starting to realize that I may need to leave the area as unfortunately there are not a lot of job opportunities here. Before doing so, I'm widening my search to include remote Marketing roles.

I'm struggling to find a way to navigate this scenario on LinkedIn profile for both local and national positions. I'd appreciate your advice. Should I create a contract / freelance section on LinkedIn and add the role there or what would you recommend? Thank you!

My guess is that it is not the position that is causing you to be dismissed after your LI profile is viewed - it's that they don't match and it could appear that you're lying.

My recommendation is that you re-organize the resume in chrono order and list the manager position as a bridge position:

    XYZ COMPANY

    X Manager - Bridge position

    February, 2024 to June, 2024

Not sure exactly what you mean by "I organized my resume so that it tells my career story" but that sounds like a functional resume and we recruiters hate those.

Thank you, Joan. I didn't realize a non-chronological resume was frowned upon by recruiters. I've listed all my jobs on my resume but grouped them rather than chronologically depending on location and industry of the job I'm applying for as I've worked throughout the US and abroad. The pandemic required deviating from my career and I want to highlight past positions than post pandemic when applying for similar roles. I appreciate your idea regarding the 'bridge' classification as I haven't heard of that option previously.

The reason we don't like functional resumes is that it doesn't put your experience in context. I can't tell if you're doing what I need you to be doing now or were you doing it 12 years ago.

When I look at a resume, I'm looking for what have you done, what company did you do it at, and for how long. Location doesn't really matter.

You might want to put a line in your summary section about looking to transition back to your pre-pandemic industry. I would actually make that the first line. You could mention the relocation - something along the lines of "Relocated during the pandemic to be closer to family, looking to transition back to ...."

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Or "Relocated during the pandemic to be closer to family and accepted Manager bridge position, looking to transition back to ...."

Thank you and I'll update my resume today with your suggestions. I have such a non-linear trajectory that it's often difficult to share my path in my resume. I focus on results but due to life events, it's in different industries, levels and locations.

LinkedIn is not exactly the best place to find jobs right now. Has not been so for 2-3 years. Too many applicants and not enough jobs. Unless you are contacted by a USA based recruiter, there is not a lot of hope in LinkedIn. If you have developed some sort of list of contacts with local USA based recruiters, that is probably the best option right now. Other than that, look directly at company websites.

GirlBossanova934974 Thank you and I'm trying to find other avenues besides LI and Indeed. When I apply on a company's website, I see the company reviewing my LinkedIn and then I don't hear anything. I'm spending a lot of time crafting my resume and feel like it's overlooked by checking out my LI profile. Do you have any advice regarding how to find the company's hiring if not on LinkedIn or Indeed. I'd appreciate your help!

Most employers take a look at your LinkedIn profile. The question she asked was how does she present herself on LinkedIn.

You cannot create a separate section because of the formatting that they hold you to. I would leave the company on there but perhaps create a public title non level based and use that same title in your resume. When you interview and get further apath you can explain the situation and knowing that we all went through covid etc it should settle out. Write a cover note with every application so that you don't have to explain each time.

List it as a temp position. Highlight the wins or major projects in this role.
