It's one of several factors, and it honestly depends on the employee.
About 10 years ago there was a young man (23) at our office who left a great position within our company. Reason? The new job offered him a 6-figure salary. Our path's crossed about 3 years ago and I asked how he liked the new job. To say he hated it would have been an understatement. But he'll never leave because the pay is amazing.
Work environment is a factor for certain. My job isn't unpleasant or toxic. But, I've been there over 21 years and no longer feel I have value. Most of the "old timers" in our company agree with me. And we all stay for the same reasons:
- Pay - The company pays well. I should be paid more according to the industry I work in, but my salary allows me to live comfortably.
- Seniority - All of us know our jobs well and our clients and customers rely heavily on us
- Each other - There are deep rooted friendships that have developed over the years. My coworkers are some of the most incredible people I've ever come to know.
- Age - The youngest "old timer" is 49. I'll be 57 (eep!!) this year. I know my marketability is extremely low at this age.
If I was motivated by work environment, many of us would have quit over 10 years ago. I guess you could say that we stay for each other - not for the company itself.
