I have been working at my company for almost 3 years--this October will make 3 years. I love my job more than anything and take so much pride in what I do. I am literally still happy going to work everyday...still. But lately, ever since we hired a new kitchen manager, things have been really weird. Since I have been working there, I have had 3 GM's (including the current one), 3 kitchen managers, and 3 assistant general managers. My current GM is great--for the most part. He doesn't seem to have a backbone but hes great. He doesn't like confrontation. Anyway, when I started working there, I began as a cashier. I quickly got promoted to shift leader after about a month. I am still stuck in this shift lead position. I have spoken with my regional manager and GM about the assistant general manager position and have done everything I need to do in order to get the position. I haven't had a raise in 2 years. I have been asking for one since last January (of 2024). About 2 months ago, I finally had the sit down with the regional manager and my GM about making the move up the ladder. It went as far as my regional manager asking me to send her an email about what I needed financially each week after taxes. I thought long and hard about it, wrote her the email and sent it off. During the Christmas holiday, I fell sick with the flu. Keep in mind that I had never called out of work before this...and I tried not to even call out then. On christmas eve, I went to work feeling extremely under the weather. I dozed off while at the register. My new kitchen manger noticed and said something to me about it. I told her I wasnt feeling well and offered to take a break to pull myself together but she told me she needed me to stay up front to keep things running smoothly. So i pulled through the rest of the shift. chin up. gut up. About 2 weeks later, i reached out to my regional manager to see what the status of my raise and transition was and she called a meeting with myself, my GM and oddly, my kitchen manager (?). Not sure why a kitchen manager needs to be involved with anything that has to do with a front of house employee and a raise. Anyhow, during the meeting my kitchen manager called me out for some extremely petty things. One of which was me being extremely tired at work on xmas eve. I explained my situation and why I was so tired. It was embarassing and ridiculous that nobody seemed to care that I came to work on christmas eve SICK and didnt call out. For me, that is dedication and I didnt want to let anyone down and make my fellow employees suffer. I knew I could push through the day if I just tried. So thats what I did. She went on to also talk about little things that she has had to remind me of while at work. Things that have never been a problem before she got there. Anyway, the meeting didnt go well and I am back trying to priove myself yet again. And fighting for a position she told my regional manager I deserved. I am so confused. dont know what to do. I need more money and i deserve it. almost 3 years and haven't ever called out of work, finish everyone else jobs when they dont, stay later than anybody else, do anything thats ever been asked of me. I dont know what more I can do to prove that I deserve a raise (if nothing else) and the promotion. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!@

You're not going to advance here. You need to look for a job somewhere else. That's really your only option unless you want to stay exactly where you are doing exactly what you're doing.

You need to find a new job. They are clearly never going to appreciate or promote you here. And if you work around food you should definitely NOT be working when you're sick. Good luck.

First, conversations with your boss is the person to discuss salary increases. This person and your regional manager can move you but they’re not. And there is no honor, no kudos, zilch’, nada for going to work sick. That will never get you anything in the working world if you infect everyone else. Nor does it help you. Maybe you would get points for not missing a class in college but in the real world if you went to work sick, what favor did you expect to receive? You learned a hard lesson. Get another job.

It's risky to downplay your physical health. Look into classes to give you leadership credentials and apply for management training positions with other companies. Current company may have difficulty with standard operating procedures to promote current employees.

I understand that calling out on Christmas Eve would be challenging, but if you are contagious, you have no business going to work, especially if it involves handling food. Others would have rallied and kept the place open. You jeopardized getting coworkers and patrons sick. That is not dedication. It is reckless.

I was not contagious. And I completely agree that nobody should be around food and/or healthy people while they’re contagious. It wasn’t that type of sick. But thank you for the advice

I'm sorry, but you said you had the flu, which is highly contagious.

Clearly your employer is not interested in moving you ahead. Irrespective of going to work while ill (which is not acceptable for any reason as it could cause others to be sick) you are being overlooked for what you want. Just because you want and need it doesn't mean your employer will give it to you. If money is what you want search for another role where the pay is what you need. If the higher position is what you want and they are not giving it to you then you have to accept that information (though you may not like it) and move on.
