I once bought a peach coloured trouser and thought I'll steal some attention but it turned terrible. Soon I realized I am not the one to flaunt such colors with confidence. Not everything that looks pleasing to your eyes would look good on you so try before picking a top or an accessory!

"Wear something you can move in." When I was young, my mom always made me do high kicks, a few squats, and throw a couple of punches in whatever I was trying on. I thought it was silly, but enjoyed the exercise. Once I started shopping exclusively for myself, I kept this rule and couldn't be happier. I'm comfortable throughout the day and never have to worry about that last minute rush to make the train.

My mom did the same thing - sit down, bend over and touch your toes, etc.!

If the shoes are slightly uncomfortable when you're trying them on, they'll be even worse when you start trying to walk in them.

Know your body type and dress for it. Also, never chase trends. What's "in" today will be "out" in six months or less. (Anyone remember the shrug?) The classics will never let you down.

Only buy something if you love it. If you feel "iffy" about it in the store or like one aspect of it but not another, such as like the color but not the fabric or neckline, you will not wear it and it will be a waste of money. Before you buy something, think about whether you have the shoes, accessories, etc. you need to go with it or if you would need to invest in several other new items before it becomes an outfit. Finally, if the shoes hurt you in the store, they will TORTURE you if you purchase them; never buy shoes that don't feel good in the store.

I agree with all, especially the shoes! I have a few pair in my closet that I can't wear because after a couple of minutes they KILL my feet. Loving the way they look isn't enough.

Everything Bridgette Raes has ever written! Her color palates are saved in my favorites, her base accent pop formula is magic, don't "wishful wardrobe," and avoid duplicate pieces.
