Hello!

Hello!

I am looking for advice. I have 15 years of leadership and recruiting experience, but I don't have a degree. I'm struggling with how to get around the algorithms for online applications. I get automatic rejections when applying for jobs that say Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred. I have heard from several people in those organizations that experience is almost always preferred over education, but I am curious if there is something more I can do to get in front of recruiters to prove myself.

Any advice/feedback is appreciated! Thank you!

I am always amazed by job postings for even clerical administrative jobs that ask for a bachelors degree and then employers wonder why they can’t find anyone to fill their jobs.

I was a recruiter for over 30 years. I did not have a degree. I had some college credits. I would put any additional courses that you may have taken AIRES, LinkedIn recruiting courses etc, on your resume/profile, if you haven’t taken any, maybe at least take one now and then you can update your résumé, obviously lying is not an answer because they always find out. If you have a great experience, find the right words to get past the algorithms, you can go online and Google what the algorithms look for so that you can use all the right wording on your résumé. It is so interesting that now we’re in need of more employees without degrees. One large company recently took the degrees off the table and hired 50% more eligible employees and a large percentage of them worked out very very well. Looks like the trend isn’t going towards college. our country is lacking in blue-collar workers and other technical type jobs that don’t require college. They require other trade training.

That doesn’t help the folks that have a lot of experience and don’t have a degree. Employers need to stop judging people (especially in recruiting), by education alone. Great people skills, great communication skills, Great Follow up skills, great probing skills. They don’t teach that in college.

This is very reassuring and extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I feel way more confident just reading yours and the others' feedback and guidance.

This is when networking really comes to be super important. even if you get around the algorithm, If a hiring manager wants a degree you're probably not going to get the role if you're just applying for it.

however if your referral they're more than likely not gonna care that you don't have a degree.

The most ; Important thing to remember is stay positive & trust that you can achieve any job that you want regardless of the qualifications, what is meant for you, you can't be stopped

You need to connect with someone with in the organization you are applying to, depending on who does the referral they will pull your resume directly as supposed to getting it thru the ATS

That is my case. What I have been doing is to apply to anything that is close to my qualifications. I have always been with a job by doing that. Sometimes I get jobs that I am overqualified, but those jobs pay my bills.

    Good luck!
