I am! I'm trying to figure out what tech career would utilize my strengths so I could get into flow while also providing financial growth. Some paths I'm considering are data analyst, software tester, etc.

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. The first thing to do is assess your strengths. Here's a free assessment I often use in coaching: https://high5test.com/. Once you have a better sense of your strengths, consider some tech-career roles. Here's some examples: "Data Analyst" if you enjoy working with numbers, or "Software Tester" if you're detail-oriented and good at problem-solving. Maybe "UX Designer" if you're a creative thinker, "Business Analyst" if you enjoy bringing together business and technical needs, or "Project Manager" if you're super organized. After you assess your strengths, try out some online courses in these areas, research job markets, and speak with professionals in these fields. Then, you can get a better idea of where you best "fit," given your strengths, interests, and overall professional desires.

I’m looking to energize my career, which could mean a switch of employer or even going solo. I’m a policy analyst, which means I read, think and write a lot. I have 15 years of experience, so I do have a lot of ideas. I’m taking a short course on ways to externalize my ideas, which has me excited. I appreciate your suggestions on how to action change.

Super exciting! Have your considered leveraging your expertise to start a consulting business or thought leadership through blogging, podcasting, or writing for industry publications? Those would be great ways to "externalize" your ideas, and you never know where that could lead. You can also look into roles at think tanks or research institutions that align with your interests. Networking is ALWAYS important, so connect with people in policy circles, attend conferences, and engage in online forums. One more thing... have you thought about teaching or guest lecturing at universities? That could be an exciting pivot for you too. Whichever path you choose, you can use your analysis skills in fresh, engaging ways. I hope this is helpful.

Yes, but right now I just need a job. My husband and I are having serious problems. I haven't worked in years, I'm 54 no one wants to hire me. I'm looking to find work I can do at home. Data entry, or something. I wouldn't mind learning medical coding, but I can't afford to go back to college for that. What am I to do?. Our one vehicle breaks down every week.

Hi, I understand you're in a challenging situation. Know that there are options available. Consider looking for remote entry-level positions in data entry, virtual assistance, or customer service. Websites like FlexJobs and Remote.co can be helpful. You're right; a full medical coding certification might be expensive. Explore free introductory courses to see if it's a good fit before you invest a lot of time and money. To sharpen your skills (important for ALL of us!) take advantage of free online learning platforms - like Coursera, edX, or Khan Academy - to enhance your skills. Don't overlook freelancing platforms for short-term jobs that could lead to steady work, like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer.com. And let your network know what you're seeking. You never know who knows who, and needs what you do well. Stay persistent – finding the right opportunity takes time, but can do it!
