A general question for recruiters:

A general question for recruiters: why does almost every job posting state “Must be detail oriented?” What does that even mean? Do you think that it actually discourages people from applying? Is someone going to say “No, details aren’t my jam. I’m all about the big picture?”

i have never in all my years ever posted an ad with detail oriented. I have much bigger fish to fry.

Actually, yes, if you are not detail oriented you need to be aware of that about yourself and not waste time applying for a job that requires orientation to detail. And if you don't know what it means do yourself a favor and find out.

A person who is not detail oriented will be driven crazy if s/he has to attend to details for the majority of their work day.

You'd be surprised what people will come back on when they don't proof, hurry and not spend time, and care about the details. Albeit an antiquated phrase, perhaps there could be an 'updated' way of saying 'Hey Rockstar, did you spellcheck or proof any of the grammar on this project, when you say 'it didn't work' how and why didn't it work'. Shocking, but what phrase would you like in place of this?

I’m not a recruiter, however I do have this valuable skill. I inherited it from my mom. I work for a real estate title company in the records department. When I scan the policies we receive I make sure the check matches the policy. Often times the agent makes the mistake of sending the wrong policy or swapping the checks. It amazes me that my coworkers miss this. It creates headaches and extra work if the items are mismatched and processed. It only takes a min to scan over the information. Being detail oriented is a great skill to have, especially if it saves time and prevents errors. ?

OP here. I don’t. I was just asking.

OP here and thank you for your comments. Some of your responses made me realize that I am detail oriented and just remembered some actual examples where that helped me shine.

Once was when I did a contract abstract and queried about something that didn’t make sense. The head of Legal was upset that it got all the way to me for it to be noticed and bagged his staff about it.

My manager was proud of me - and hopefully herself for hiring me!

May not happen often but I love to hear when they do ?

I think it’s an old standby statement, sort of like you must know MS Office Suite. As a former recruiter I posted my own jobs. Most were technical if not all but I’ve read tons and plenty of others that had that statement, I’m very detail oriented and it bodes me well. Be sure you check your resume and cover letter for spelling and grammar. That pretty much helps! Good luck!

Actually yes. I am NOT a detailed person. And if a posting says that I do not apply.

But usually you need to do well in the detail-oriented position first to promote to a Manager/Director/VP. Position. LoL Management level work is much easier for me. I am a big-picture people person who had to check & re-check my work constantly before submission. Once i made it to management I discovered many people who are naturally detail oriented are not always good at managing people & team projects. Unfortunately its often hard to skip right to Management/Director/VP etc. —just my observation.
