Grateful for my job and my boss.

Grateful for my job and my boss.

In the last 2 years I have had to step back from coming in early/staying late due to my spouse changing careers. I am now the go-to parent for my kids sick days, events and eLearning days. My employer/boss have been understanding and flexible with my new requirements and I am so thankful for this. Skipping forward to this year- We found out my husband is dealing with cancer. It's treatable and we hope after these next few treatments this will eventually just be a distant memory. I have had to take 1 day a week off to accompany my husband to his treatments and my work has been understanding and flexible through everything again. I can't help but feel guilty that I require so much flexibility now though. I used to volunteer to come in early, work late, pick up extra shifts; But all of that has had to change and I want to find a professional way to show my appreciation to my company/boss/coworkers. Any advice on how to do this without looking like an emotional fool?

(Ps. I'm a big softy so trying to verbalize anything never works out for me!)

I'm so sorry you're going through this. IJust went through the same thing last year, and was also fortunate enough to have an understanding boss. Sign up for short term FMLA ASAP, bc you will need the job protection it offers at some point.

You can show your appreciation by keeping your coworkers updated on project statuses & clear directions on how they can help. Whatever work you can do, just ensure it's thorough. It's hard for others to help, if they have to scramble for info.

I only told my boss and a few trusted coworkers and asked for their understanding and patience. Do not feel guilty about new priorities. You can show appreciation at the end, once you make it through.

Good luck, be good to yourself.

Your very lucky to have such a great boss most of us don’t. Best of luck to your husband.

Firstly, wishing a speedy recovery for your husband, cancer sucks! This too shall pass, and being positive will definitely help with his recovery and your also getting through as his caregiver.

Secondly, I would speak to the person that you report to and your team in a private conversation, pour your heart out with the gratitude and let them know that while home you are willing as much as possible to take on other things that can help the team overall. I can tell you from personal experience the mundane bs that you can do while you/he are dealing with this disease will help you to realize how insignificant anything else is besides him getting healthy. If finding the words is difficult for you print a copy of what you wrote here and give it to your manager/team and let them know that you truly truly appreciate their compassion and flexibility and that only makes you more blessed and happy to be in the company of such wonderful human beings. Life does throw curveballs, but I sense you have the inner strength and fortitude to make it through with him.
