Feel like you have nothing to show for your work?

3 ways this could be making imposter syndrome feel overwhelming.

  1. Mentally Generalizing your work - you put forth alot of effort, hours, and "do alot".. but everything is too much to think about so you mentally group it all together, but do not have specifics to show what you've accomplished. This is like training for a race but you never use a stopwatch so you have no idea where you're at or if you've really improved.
  2. To-Do thinking vs. Results Focused - thinking in tasks can help you execute to get things done, but at the end of the day can leave you without considering the results you've created. You are spending more time on the doing and less time on the end result.
  3. Undervaluing yourself professionally - if you aren't consistently thinking about or identifying the value of your work, its easy to fall into the trap of thinking "I dont know my value/worth" & "my work isn't valuable". You probably aren't taking the time to consistently identify and quantify the value of your work. Everytime you skip this step, you are missing out on building the identity for yourself that you are valuable, and you have the skills and metrics to show for it.

One simple takeaway you can start doing today to break this cycle is every time you take an action, write an end result sentence for it. For example : Task: Emailing customer service & ops teams to get a new account set up in the system. Result : Account set up to get first order in before the deadline. (from there you can add numbers, revenue etc but for todays sake.. keep it simple!)

You'll start shifting from generalization to certainty when you start acknowledging the results you're creating, not just effort you exerted.

I like your takeaway action to break the cycle. Have used this approach successfully in the past.

Another question to ask along these lines is what have I done that a person new to this job would not know how to do? - Think about how you would train another person to do your job and why it would be important for them to learn this. Sometimes we approach situations and actions instinctively and with institutional knowledge, especially after a long time on the job, and forget what contribution we are making in terms of dollars gained, expenses trimmed, processes streamlined, customers obtained, etc.

That is a great perspective! It's so easy to forget our contribution when everything is just instinct.
