Within the next few weeks, I am taking over a department that I have never worked in before and I have no idea how they do what they do or the processes involved. Upper management does not need me for that, the employees know how to build what they are building. They need me for the employee side of things. I have a fully engaged team that participates in discussions, is not afraid of change, they are not afraid to speak up when something is wrong. We have worked for 2 years on the basics and how to speak and be heard as more than just an average disgruntled employee. My employees would build a wall to protect me and they also know, I am always on the front line protecting them. The thing I am most proud of is I have NEVER, even when they were guilty, thrown anyone under the bus. If something fails, it is my responsibility. I should have done more follow up on the training. I try to treat people like they are human and in return, I have an incredible staff. I really hate leaving them.
The department I am going in to needs these things terribly. You better believe within a month, I will know how they do what they do. I don't and won't be a do as I say, not as I do supervisor. Personally I don't respect managers/leaders who don't attempt to help when I need it and I don't expect employees who work for me to do it either.
