Career Transition

I'm a 54 year old with over 30 years experience but looking to making a career change but facing the abilities that I may be aged out. Am I too old for a career transition?

Work shouldn't be a 4-letter word.

No, you are not too old!! A friend of mine, who is a fellow career coach, focuses on your age demographic because of those exact thoughts (too old, too late). If you want to check her out, her website is: https://louiseneil.com/

I'm really very certain on this. You are never too old. And look what support you've sparked on this! I'm onto my own career 2. We're close in age. My business is entirely focused on helping seasoned professionals who feel stuck at a career crossroads to make a plan realigning work they love with who they are (today) and the life they wish they were living . The point being, I have numerous case study anecdotes of other committed careerists who were either thrust onto a career crossroads or feel trapped in the career they wanted. There is literally no-one who doesn't get to reimagine their next career chapter. Then get there. Now I don't want to over-promise. An agile career mindset is always in play as they climb my coaching ladder. It's a system that's designed to first get crystal clear clarity about what you need to align with, then uses a bias to action to pilot test ideas and avenues worth exploring - so you don't over-invest in a shiny new pathway until you already have certainty it's the one for you. And will get traction. So instead of thinking about your age. And market norms. And the current climate. Think instead: how many careers do I have in me... what transferable skills sit within the experience I've acrrued... what do I lose myself in when I do it ... and you'll open your mind to numerous possibilities. That's an important first step on the ladder I say... Do be in touch if you'd welcome some support on this... best of luck, Helen

Hello Helen, I greatly appreciate your feedback on what you have written here. I will say that I feel totally trapped in my current role far to long and it's something that I've been burned out in for a long time. I've looked at all angles and have asked myself how many careers I can pursue, and I have a lot skills that I can transfer into a new job role. I greatly would like to welcome some support

I'm so glad my input has resonated and that you would like some support to get unstuck. To that point, I've messaged you direct with a first step we could take together. But please know this, it's no accident that Burnout has recently been officially recognised as a psychological condition. It's a tough place to try to curate a What Next Quest from and harder to get into action even if you could conjure up the bandwidth for that. It might give you comfort to know I have a background in psychology - we'll start with the mental fitness piece when we talk. It's key. And because the message box is so very small - here's a little by way of introduction to me and my own story - which could be titled 'from career to motherhood and back again' I often think! https://www.helenhanison.com/news/the-lightbulb-moment-that-taught-me-to-navigate-career-and-motherhood/ Speak soon. Warmly, Helen

I'm in the same boat! If you have an idea of what area you want to transition into, that helps with the search. You most likely have some "soft skills" that will transition into another industry. And 50 is the new 30! Go for it! Good luck!

I hope not! I agree, working with a professional on a resume refresh is ideal, if you can afford a small investment in yourself. This forum seems like another great place for support and maybe even some leads! Believe in yourself and value your worth.

I think attitude is almost everything here--if you can dream it, you can do it! That said, you probably have a better chance in some industries than others. What is the change you're looking to make?
