I’m considering turning down an interview due to them asking for unpaid work during the interview process. If it was something they could not use if I’m not hired, or something less time consuming, I might consider it. However, it requires logging into their platform and teaching myself part of it in order to make a presentation. They also advised that 5 other people are still in the pipeline for this job, so it seems like they don’t really know what they want. The kicker in all of this is that the job description provided to me initially was for one role, and they’ve since changed it to backfill for someone who is leaving. They have said the description isn’t much different, but have yet to provide me with an updated job description. This feels very bait-and-switch-y to me, but I am not sure if I’m reading too much into the situation. Their communication also feels disjointed- I get phone calls instead of responses to my emails, and then the follow up email doesn’t reflect what was discussed.

Yes, I agree. They seem to not have a clear idea on what they want

I personally do not believe in doing work for the company during the interview process. It feels like free work for the company under the guise of let's see how you do. Move on.

This sounds so scammy! Allowing a non-employee into their servers to do unpaid work without an offer letter???? Even if it wasn’t a scam, no way would I work for a company that is so loose with their security and human resource policies - run!

I personally wouldn't do anything until they give you the updated job description because the updated one might be for a position you wouldn't have applied for and aren't interested in doing.

The company sounds dodgy, especially the switch in job description.

If you are not provided with a written job description, I’d pull out. You are owed that before you complete an assignment.

If you don't want to do what their interview process entails then decline. If it's not the role you wanted, then decline. There are plenty of people out there who will showcase their skills for these roles. Not really thinking it's a bait and switch, but often they identify what the really need after postings, and if it's not for you, all good. Don't feel obligated to move forward.
