I was recently terminated from a senior role in a Fortune 500 company just as I was approaching the one year mark. A week prior to being terminated, out of the blue my boss, during a regular weekly discussion, informed me that she was not satisfied with my performance. She cited examples of this supposed poor performance but they were weak. In fact I had feedback from others who worked with me on those projected who praised my work. When I mentioned this to her, she told me this is how she feels and asked me to think about what steps I would be taking to improve and correct my performance. She said next time we speak she wants me to be prepared to inform her what steps I would be taking. First, I was taken by surprise because in all the other work I had done all I ever received was praise from my boss. In fact just the week prior to this negative feedback I received an email from my boss stating that I had done an excellent job on a project. So therefore adding to my confusion. And how am I supposed to come to the table with steps I would take when I did not understand why this all of a sudden turned sour? And she also followed up our conversation with her views stated in writing which she emailed to me. So, at my next meeting with her, after stressing and thinking through what steps I might want to take to improve I did not even have a chance. That very next meeting I was informed that she was terminating my position. Has this happened to anyone else? I am still hurt, side blinded and left dumbfounded. And now I am worried about what to do as I am not sure how to explain this to a prospective new employer if asked why I left this role. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like they are doing some cost cutting and your position was one of their solutions. I would not take it to heart (impossibleto do).. I'm not sure how you explain it other than the company chose to eliminate the position. I would consider a consultation with an attorney to understand your recourse in terms of severance due to wrongful termination. And a cease and desist so the company does not perpetuate the poor performance storyline that is clearly false.

its probably nothing to do with your performance , especially if you have something that states how happy she is with your performance. I agree with the other posting and they are probably cutting positions due to budgets. If you work in an at will state, going to a lawyer is a waste of time. They have the right to eliminate and lay off as they please. Something similar happed to me. It hurts. I would try and get a letter of recommendation from someone there if it is not to late so you can show future employers your skills and accomplishments. Good luck!
