Job reference question

Job reference question

I interviewed for a position today (it's a state job-Department of Revenue) and they emailed me asking me to complete a background check form and also asked for a 3rd reference. I really don't have another good reference. I could get great references at my current job but I am not ready to let any of them know I am job searching. Prior to the position I am in now, I worked at the transportation department for 3 months. I had to leave because we moved out of state. The department head was upset to see me go and said she would be an enthusiastic reference for me if I needed one (she even emailed me after I left just to reiterate what a valuable person I was). The problem is that I did not put this position on my resume. It was so short and seemed irrelevant. Plus, you only have so much space on a resume. Is it a bad idea to use her as a reference and just give a brief explanation as to why it is not on the resume? My only other option is an old friend that I started a business with back in 2013. She changed her mind a few months in and left me to build the business on my own. I did build it and sold it for a profit 3 years later. Would that even be a decent reference since it was so long ago and the partnership portion short lived? It is also not on my resume but just because of the time period.

Basically until a year and a half ago I was mostly a stay at home mom that just did whatever was necessary at any given time. Now my kids are grown and I am trying to navigate building a career late in life. This is hard. Any advice on my best option would be appreciated.

I'm at the reference stage for a government job as well so I hope my advice helps. Two of my references are for roles listed on my resume and the third, was from a previous company.

I have more than 20 years of experience so I streamline my resume to list roles from 2010 and beyond. I would add the third person you mentioned as reference checks are mostly character and work ethic.

When selecting references, we pick people who are going to give a positive endorsement so your friend was your business partner. Wishing you all the best and good luck!

I would definitely use the enthusiastic ex-boss from the short term job. Call her to discuss using her as a reference. She sounds like she's really in your corner.

Have you volunteered anywhere? Volunteer coordinators make wonderful character and work ethic references. A lot of people overlook those because they weren't paid positions, but sometimes, they can carry more weight than the paid ones.

This is great advice. Also, consider listing if you helped out at school with the kids, or a program such as 4H, a coach, or a local library. Good luck!

I used to volunteer with VITA. Unfortunately, they use new coordinators every year and I'm not even sure where to get the contact info. This is a great idea though

Ask your previous business partner for a reference. Hopefully you are on good terms and can get that. Getting this state job is vital and will provide you so many great benefits. I'm a state employee too. Good luck to you!

So I had a last minute thought and went with it. I have a real estate license that I don't really use unless something drops in my lap or I buy or sell my own house. I ended up using my most recent broker as a reference. I was going to use the ex-boss and then I started reading some of the language on the state web site regarding the importance of listing ALL past experience (I guess I overlooked that before) and I got scared. Either way, they called me yesterday, a few hours after I sent them the third reference and told me I got the job. I just have to wait for HR to write up a formal offer.
