Hey Sisters! I wanted to get your thoughts on getting a role that has a TS/SCI security clearance. I don't have an active one, so would need to start from the beginning. Thank you for your help!

I read where you can apply on your own. Standard form SF86. Google it and it should give you more detail. Hope that helps! Lots of DoD contracts require it and some companies pending the work you do may require it. I was a recruiter, I looked for those already with the specific clearances and recruited previous military folks. But looks like you can try to get one on your own. Keep us posted and good luck!

OP - Thanks! So if I fill this out, send it to who(?) and this would get me the TS/SCI without having to have it sponsored? And I found links here:

    Form: SF86 - https://www.opm.gov/Forms/pdf_fill/sf86.pdf

FWIW, I needed a government sponsor for a job with the DoD when I did this, and it took nearly six months for a lower-level "public trust" clearance. You'll have to submit a lengthy history and fingerprints, as well as go through having friends, family, and neighbors interviewed depending on the level of clearance. My suggestion is to look for jobs posted by recruiters who specifically work with government contracts (any owned by Bristol Bay Native like Vista Defense comes to mind) or direct opportunities with government contractors like L3 Harris. They can at least get you in on the ground floor and you may be able work your way up from there. These clearances are not like certifications or licenses. That's why they are in such high demand.

Those roles are hard to find, even with an existing but lower security clearance. I recommend applying for roles that require lower clearances and work your way up because TS/SCI process is time intensive and expensive. I also recommend researching the same question at ClearanceJobs (https://news.clearancejobs.com/).
