I have worked at my company for 25+ years. Much of my time is spent traveling. A cell phone package has been something the company supplied for me and many other senior managers. I got an email that says as of the end of the month they are no longer paying for this for the 6 remaining with this benefit, as it has created “an imbalance of benefits between those who have it and those who don’t”. I’m furious and told them so. After 25+ years there should be some benefits that are Grandfathered. What do you think?

I think senior managers getting perks that lower-paid staffers don't get even though they would benefit proportionately more is a bad look. If you're making a decent salary, you can afford to pay for your own cell phone and this feels petty. But blow it up if you want to leave on a bad note.

    Agree 100%!!!...

But this is a petty thing to complain about... I pay seventy four dollars a month for a fantastic cell plan... Is that going to kill anyone in a senior management?.. no. ... And it does look very petty.

I think this would be a hard benefit to grandfather in but they could maybe offer to reimburse a flat amount towards your bill. (In addition to the actual phone plan, they also need to maintain and regularly upgrade your phone etc.)

The other thing to consider that hasn’t been mentioned… if they’re expecting you to use your personal phone for work, are you also expected to respond outside of your working hours on your personal phone? I feel like it’s much easier to separate work when you have a work and personal phone, I would set expectations in advance if you think this will be an issue.

Stop using your cell phone for work. It will be extremely hard for work to get done but you have the perfect excuse.

Agree.... I have been working for 30+ years, used to have a pro Blackberry for 12 years, and as soon as it disappeared, I decided to carry on with my personal smartphone only instead of having a basic old device from my company. Communications don't cost anything even abroad with all the multiple options at disposaI, we're hardly make any phone call from now on anyway, I can't see the point of having a professional phone at all at this stage, let alone of fighting for it.

if you are using your phone for work, I believe you must be given a stipend to cover . Check your states laws. This has been brought up in many class action lawsuits.

My old company tried to pull this and several of us managers said we refused to use our personal cell phones for business. We were hired with a company cell phone as part of our job and it was in the job description. Needless to say, they let us keep our company cell phones.

I know people do, but I would never use my personal phone for work. In the past I’ve had to sign documents that they can wipe your phone to clear business data, so no thank you to mixing business and personal on one phone. If a company wants an employee to use a cell phone for work, they should supply it, full stop.

Thank you! I have this constant argument with my IT. Mine is supplied by the company because I'm HR and I do not want people to have my personal number, but it's been an ongoing battle on getting for others as well as having some semblance of a decent mobile phone policy (it's a really sore subject here).

They are being petty and cheap. Don't use your phone for work.
