Too many companies are downsizing and there is a lot of competition. Also, some are hesitant to hire in the current environment. That said, I would suggest that you try posting your resume on the usual job boards plus a specialty job board or two in your area. Contract jobs are much easier to find and companies usually have an urgent need to fill, meaning that if you have the skills and are reliable, they are not so fussy about sex, age, and all of the other external factors. (I was able to get a well-paying contract job lasting over a year and at the time I was 71 with a 20-year gap since gainfully employed - however, did have quite a lot of volunteer non-profit experience in between). As you can see, it can be done. You may just have to be patient for a few months. If you need benefits, you can continue your job search, but meanwhile you will have money coming in to meet your ongoing needs.
