Let me be honest with you about what is actually happening in the 2026 job market.

Let me be honest with you about what is actually happening in the 2026 job market.

Because the mixed signals are real and they are messing with people's heads.

Jobs exist. But people are not getting interviews.

Companies are hiring. But searches are taking twice as long.

You are qualified. But you keep getting passed over.

Here is what is actually going on.

This is a low-hiring, high-competition market. Unemployment is relatively stable, but job searches are up over 30%. That means more people chasing fewer openings and companies being significantly more selective about every single hire.

Companies are not hiring fast. They are hiring carefully. AI and better screening tools mean they can filter more aggressively. Interview processes are longer. Almost all candidates get cut. And rejections feel more arbitrary because the bar has quietly gotten higher.

AI is changing what makes you valuable. Not by replacing jobs wholesale but by shifting what skills matter. AI-literate professionals, strategic thinkers, and people who know how to use AI as a tool are in demand. The people competing with AI are losing ground. The people using it are pulling ahead.

Skills now matter more than titles. About 70 percent of employers are using skills-based hiring. What you can do and prove matters more than where you worked or what your degree says. And this is exactly why so many qualified people feel stuck. Their experience is real. It is just not being translated clearly.

Soft skills are a competitive advantage right now. Leadership, communication, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are genuinely hard to find. The people winning are not just technically strong. They are visible, clear, and strategic communicators.

Here is the real problem, though: This is not a broken market. It is a misaligned one.

People are struggling because they look like everyone else on paper, are not positioned clearly for the right roles, and are relying too much on applying instead of being found.

The 2026 advantage goes to the people who are clear in their positioning, visible on LinkedIn, speaking directly to a niche, and showing outcomes instead of responsibilities.

If your job search feels harder than it should right now, you are not imagining it. But the fix is not applying more.

It is positioning better.

What part of this hits closest to home for you right now?

Awesome insight into our very confusing market. Thank you.

People who think they are doing something effective by applying to 500 jobs a month need to understand the market. Burnout is real but it doesn't have to be.

Linkedin is a tool, not a joke. If you think of it, not as social media, but as a means to make your profile better, you will probably benefit from it.

Look at other profiles similar to yours and see what they say that makes their profiles pop. Copy what you find if it serves you. Add people to your network of followers because you gain their followers when they are associated with you. It's all about how well you present yourself and what you have to offer. So, offer it as well as you can and get better at it. Position yourself in the company of successful people and it actually does rub off!

Take your profile or resume and drop it into CHATGPT and ask CHATGPT how to make yours better. Updating is key and there is always room for improvement. Showcase your skills to get ahead. You want to be seen and you want your skills to be readable. You just have to recognize what you're seeing and look at it as an opportunity to propel you to where you want to go.

Look at LinkedIn as a networking opportunity. The sky is the limit as to how many people see what you put out there and beat down your door to work with you. Me and my colleagues use LinkedIn exclusively. I can personally testify that I have gotten hired as a consultant, and also work in related salaried positions in the last 15 years through LinkedIn. Headhunters I never would have otherwise been affiliated with have singled me out for several six-figured positions. I can honestly say that my life changed when I joined LinkedIn. And I don't work for LinkedIn, either. Good luck in the future. ...and I didn't need to join premium for the results I have.

The job market is tough. There seems to be so many people, who are unemployed and desperately needing a good paying job. What puzzles me ......is how ghosting is becoming the norm. I reached out to a connection on LinkedIn about a "return to work program" her company was sponsoring. She was kind enough to respond and told me, that she would connect me with the person in that specific program.

The person "Ramona" reached out and scheduled a video call within one week. Ramona seemed kind, did a mini interview and left me feeling optimistic. I explained that I already applied to the program, back in December, but no one reached out to me. Ramona said that, she would forward my resume to a few departments because I was that qualified. She stated she would get back to me that week. Days, weeks have passed. I followed up with her in an email.......................no response. Wow! Then I circled back to my LinkedIn contact, because I thought maybe Ramona was out or maybe no longer worked there..............once again crickets. This was so disheartening and unprofessional. This same company has a habit of not responding to job applications. Okay .......so I learned my lesson...........this company just isn't for me. I just don't understand why people can't be professional and follow up timely. To ignore someone is just ridiculous.

Thank you for sharing this. There’s a lot of valuable insight here. I’d like to add is that while soft skills and AI literacy are becoming factors that set candidates apart, hard skills are still the foundation that get you in the door and establish credibility especially in technical or regulated environments. To me, what seems to separate top candidates now is the ability to layer those skills, strong technical applications for example, paired with clear, results oriented communication of impact. In other words candidates aren’t just saying what they did, they’re connecting it to outcomes, accuracy, and value for the role.

I’m curious how you’re seeing employers weigh that balance right now, between demonstrated technical skill and overall positioning? By positioning, I mean how candidates present their experience so employers quickly understand their value and fit.
