im very unhappy with my current job if 23 years & have an interview in the same line of work but for the state. I’m currently working in the private sector in a boutique law firm. I’m excited & nervous to start a new job (if offered to me) after so many years . What is a good response when asked, “why do you want to leave your job”?

Opportunity for new growth, experiences, type of office, etc.

“I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in my current role learning and growing and after so many years, I’m ready for a new challenge. I’m excited to apply all of my learnings but for a new law firm” something like this should resonate. Even better

if you can customize this with a few of the new projects you’ll be on in the answer.

I know this question is asked all the time as part of the interview process, but I am so over it. Its so intrusive. As the interviewee you can't always give a true answer (esp. in the legal field) and even if you can, sometimes you don't want to spill the tea about your horrible boss, or that teammate that makes your life a living hell. The answer becomes the mundane, "I'm ready for a change, been there 23 years" or "I'm ready for a greater breadth of experience". Because we all have a multitude of reasons that we leave a job, there will be many "truths" to choose from, so have a few picked out and ready. Depending on how the conversation goes, pick the one that fits the best and is the most authentic in the moment.
