Fave Corporate Gift?

Fave Corporate Gift?

Our company is (shockingly?) doing well enough to host a little holiday party for the employees and provide a gift ($50) to our small staff. I'm on the planning committee and trying to figure out a gift. We're a diverse (age, gender, race, interests) group. Have you received a gift from an employer that you appreciated/used?

A gift card that allows an employee a wide variety of choices is always good; Amazon or Target are good choices for this. Even better, giving employees an extra paid personal day would be amazing.

I think a Visa/Mastercard gift card, would be nice. The reason I say Visa, is because the employee can use the card anywhere and buy anything they want. It's not store specific. Kudos to you.... for caring enough, about the employees, to ask the question. Since you have a diverse group of people at your company, you also will have a diverse group here, so the answers could possibly be all over the place. In this economy, I would be grateful to have a holiday party.

    Gift card, don't over-engineer this.

With the economy being in the condition it is in, a gift card for sure.

Most people have enough "things" being objects that may or may not be used.

Like others I've always appreciated a gift card. My company always chose to provide (environmentally friendly) electronic ones!

They would send out a survey with a selection of gift cards (list a variety) and then you'd be emailed them. So it's opt-in. On the survey you could also offer to donate to a charity in their name, or for them to select a charity to donate to.

I always chose the grocery gift card cause it's just nice to be practical and the cost of food is so high now! Although, I am sure a gift card to a wine store is also appreciated.

Nice to offer a choice of gift card!

I agree with a few others here that gift cards are a great fit. I'm a not a fan of the Visa/Mastercard ones because they can be really hard to use and please stay away from Giftcards.com, they are horrible and it's a huge scam that just winds up being unusable or costs the receiver more money just to get the gift.

Good to know. My boss gave me a card last year for Amazon or Best Buy. I do not remember, but it turned out to be fake! He had actually bought it at Target check out. I have found that be Amex cards legit and easy to use. I wonder if companies can just slip cash in an envelope and call it petty cash. Hmmm n

I especially appreciated my Yeti. There’s something about being given a quality product.

Normally, I would say gift card, but tax people and compliance have ruined that one for me.

If you’re not able to do a cash gift card (some companies have restrictions), a few things we’ve liked in the past:

    • Credit at timbuk2 or slate to make a custom bag
    • Team north face jackets (logo in same color thread so it’s not super noticeable)
    • last year we were given those big soft comfy blankets. I don’t know what they were called but I know influencers promote them - they look so classy and are super comfy, everyone loved them

Because gift cards are considered taxable income to the employee, it's helpful to consider other ideas. I especially appreciate what my employer offers. Each December, we are provided a list of options and can choose between: quality fleece or other items with company logo, a special treat box from Harry & David's, or annual membership to our state's art, children's, or history museums and even a state park system pass. It's fun to see what the list includes each year!

Once you've been with a company a few years, you may already have your fill of company logo merch, and every time I use my membership card through the following year, I think of how my employer provided me this nice outing. Some years, I've chosen a museum membership while last year I chose the state park pass. I had a sister's trip in late summer, and we used my pass to visit at least 5 different parks! Each time we used the pass, I'd singsong, "Thank you, [my company's name]!" (like Tim Gunn in Project Runway) and my sister would joke, "SO much better than a turkey!" but, seriously, it felt like my employer had genuinely subsidized our little trip and reminded me of the thoughtfulness of my colleagues who'd thought up the gifting options :)

This is great feedback. Being inclusive can be at time difficult if the team is very diverse. The gift cards are nice, we have also provided chamber bucks for our local counties that allow the gift to be utilized at many different local shops and businesses. It is a win-win for the associates and the local economy. Good luck!

Nothing says thank you like cold hard cash.

    Yes?

Padfolios and tote bags are nice. If your office is very cold or there is a lot of sitting, it might be nice to do heated/massaging neck/shoulder pads (something like: https://a.co/d/0N42XnE). I keep one like this in my office, and all of my staff know that if they need or want to use it, they're welcome to.

Another nice gift might be this battery charger: https://a.co/d/geff9Sc I actually got this for myself, my husband, and I bought one for my boss for her birthday. I love how well it works. I can charge multiple things at once, and I can plug in my work iPhone, my personal Samsung, and my ear buds all at once, no issue. It can charge up to 6 things at a time. It'd be especially useful if you have teams that have to go out of the office to work, or if you live in an area where there are bad storms (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) that might knock power out for a while.

No, I've never received a "gift" from an employer that I liked or used. Largely, these tend to be office junk, branded plastic based bags or clothes, and the like.

Often, people do not pay for experiences, but studies show that experiences are more highly valued than physical gifts. Consider sourcing memberships or admission to local things like museums, gardens, aquariums, etc.

Gift certificates to local grocery stores or coffee shops… or something with the company logo on it- like a YETI hot/cold beverage cup.

  22. Cherrice Akins

My company loves the Starbucks, Dunkin, and Timmy gift cards.

  23. Barbara

How generous. I always appreciate when a company gives a gift card that is universal. An American Express gift card for $50 would be great. These are fun problems to have

  24. Joan Marie Verba

Remember that your employees may have food allergies or food sensitivities and avoid giving food as gifts.

  25. Kerry L. Nopper

Buy them a Master Class in something fun, not work related.

  26. Anonymous

Seriously? Give them a $50 gift card. I would rather always have that than a meaningless tchotchke I can't use.

  27. Melissa Nobile

    Amazon gift card

  28. Anonymous

We were once given $100, we were all thrilled we could spend it as we wished. A Visa gift card or something similar ensures they use it.

People want money!!! Not shitty corporate gifts.

  30. Anonymous

Why don't you tell us how you really feel? LOL. You aren't wrong though; money is ideal, or a gift card that anyone can use (like a Wal-Mart card-- you can get groceries, makeup, clothes, whatever) is the next best choice. Some of us have so many coffee mugs that we don't have room for them all, and once you have a dozen tote bags, you likely don't need any more. Providing a good lunch then letting employees go home early (with full pay for the day) plus money or a gift card such as a Wal-Mart one that gives multiple options would help employees to get in the holiday spirit.

An extra hour or two of vacation - early out on a day before a weekend

  32. Leader208892

Good choices, but not sure they can do that on the $50 per person they mention.

  33. Anonymous

While I love the idea of gift cards, please make sure you check with HR/payroll on the taxation of the amount. We were told we could not go over $25 per person or they would have to have to be taxed.

  34. Anonymous

Don't do gift cards please. Instead survey the team for a few ideas and then meet to discuss what matters most. IMHO a day off paid might be the best gift of all. Especially around holiday time. You could always rotate the dates if coverage could be an issue but that would be the best way to give them something they all can universally use. Time is something you never get back.

To answer the question of favorite gift - mine (non-gift card) is a nice backpack that was technically leftover event swag, but it's good quality and I use it all the time. Even if I leave the company, I'll probably still use it & maybe just sew a patch over the logo if it bothers me.

However, gift cards are hard to go wrong with. Less burden on you to figure out something to please everyone, and people can get exactly what they want!

    Money ?

One gift I got years ago that I still use is a pair of bluetooth speakers that work great.

Gift card, half day vacation, ear buds

In this day and age--a gift card to your local grocery store. It helps your local store and it helps your staff. It is also thoughtful.

  40. Colleen Hanson

One of my favorite gifts was a Visa Gift Card. I was able to use it for something I actually wanted!
