Interviewing Thursday for a HR Manager role. I am so anxious!

Interviewing Thursday for a HR Manager role. I am so anxious! I want to grow my career and quick more than anything! I will have 3 direct reports if I land this job. That will be new to me. Here is the thing, I am scared I will fail and am starting to feel too "comfortable" in my current job, (been here 3 years). Where I am now promises a bonus and growth, but it is a lot of ifs. I feel there are a lot of negatives to the company I am with now. They are struggling to make money, have made poor management decisions from the top down and have a bad history of holding on to toxic people just because of tenure. How do you know when the grass is greener and it's time to make a move, or what if it's worse? Yikes!!! Change can be scary - but at the same time I am the kind of person that needs change.

Change is indeed scary, been there done that. Where I screwed up was accepting the first role that offered. Make sure you truly understand (to the extent that you can) what you are getting into with the new company, ask whatever questions you may have now before accepting, etc. And ask yourself, if you accept, are you only accepting to get out of your current situation?

It's normal to be scared. What's not normal is to actively make decisions to avoid growth. So, while you are scared, you push through that to try new things. Yes, failure happens but honestly that's how you test what you're made of.

Congratulations. It's okay to feel scared (fear of failing, fear of success, etc.)

What helps you calm your body or mind? Breathing, exercise, cooking, singing, time with a pet? Or, do you need a routine. If you need a routine, I'd suggest going for a 15-30 minute walk prior to the interview. Or if the interview is in person, perhaps sit in your car for a bit- either with or without music or calming motivational words.

You know who you are and what you want. There don't have to be any reasons other than you know you can do it, you're excited for the opportunity, and you want to grow.

Fear is natural. Courage is acknowledging the fear and going forward. Find your courage in this change. Land the job & make a plan. Sounds like you're leveling up- new territory. Find some new supports, training, education, safe spaces to vent/ calm. There are lots of great books or leadership groups or even ChatGPT giving tips on what to do to calm/land the job/ once in the job.

Wishing you courage, luck, and joy.

You really need to breathe. Think about this next step from a position of how you would like to be managed and how others will need to be managed as well. Then plan your strategy and meet with your direct reports 1-1 each week to set expectations from both directions about how you will communicate and get things done. Add in there how you will course correct if things go off course and how you will motivate others to be excellent.

Put in the past the company you are leaving, don't bad mouth them on the way out or during other interviews. You simply have outgrown them.

As for when you will know if staying or leaving is best just decide what path you want. It might be good to put together a list of what you want to achieve in the next year or so. And remember your career is a marathon not a sprint so don't rush things!
