Good morning ladies! I am just wanting feedback…

I am currently about to start a job with the Department of Defense within a few days and the only setback is taking a 40k pay cut back home in Atlanta. I have been waiting nine months for this position to open working at another job. My dilemma is it offers me a way to move back closer to my mother, and my home in Florida has not sold yet.

On top of that, my mentor at another organization finally has the same job open and I’ve just completed my final interview but it will be another week before I get an offer that will allow me to not have to take a pay cut.

I was hoping that the offer came this week so I could resign my position with DoD and I feel bad for starting a job I don’t plan on keeping but have to move forward as I still have this mortgage. I’m ready and prepared to go home but

why do I feel so bad? What are your thoughts?

The new job is only one piece of your life change. Try to mentally picture the whole new experience: new budget, new home, new commute, new job, etc. Then see how comfortable it feels. That might help you better identify the source of your ambivalence.

Thanks! I have decided that the salary is too low so will stay till I get the offer.,

Just do it. There's no shame in accepting a better offer. $40k is a lot of money.

  4. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

    Yes, it is.

It’s not your fault that getting hired for the government job at the DoD took so long because of the bureaucracy. Eventually in that type of government job you would gain permanency which you won’t have in the same position in the private sector but that choice is yours to make. Choose by your preferences and don’t feel guilty.

  6. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

I have made my choice and will stay till I get the offer.

Have you asked for a higher starting salary? I am not sure if you’ve signed all the paperwork yet. I asked and received a higher starting step within my grade. You would have to provide proof of your current pay and an explanation of why they should increase you. It doesn’t always work, but it never hurts to ask.

  8. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

I actually did before signing the offer letter. I provided proof of current pay and an explanation. It did not work.

Do what’s best for you. These companies have no loyalty to you and it’s not like they’re paying your bills go for it.

  10. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

Thanks! I plan to move forward and hopefully the other job offer comes soon.

My thoughts are DO NOT feel bad. They will replace you so fast. You do what you need to do be closer to your mom.

  12. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

Yes, this is true. I am grateful for the opportunities but the salary will not work in the long run for me.

Please dont feel bad. Employers these days don't give a crap about its people so please prioritize your life and do what's best for YOU.

  14. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

Yes, I plan to move forward with this plan. I’ve come too far to turn back now.

Sale your home to Open Door. We used them to sell quickly when we needed to move to another state. They paid us $130k move than we paid for our home and closed in two weeks.

  16. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

We tried selling to Open Door and they were trying to low ball us and the offer would not have even paid off the mortgage. This house was built in May 2022 so it’s a newer home. I had to decline. We are working with another agent and the issue is a new community is being built and they are selling the new builds $30k lower than market value and giving $20k in closing costs.

This may not apply, but I had applied for two position actually at the same employer. The second interview had come and I was given an offer for the first position. I contacted HR to explain I would like the opportunity to interview for the second position. If you are expecting an offer for the second position, see what the time frame is for the first position to see if you can extend the time out before making the offer.

These positions are with two different organizations. One is Federal Government and the other is Bank. I start the Federal position tomorrow and I have completed all interviews for the Bank position but they are so business there is a delay in moving into the offer stage about two weeks.

Choosing the right position when you have more is a dilemma. I feel you for wanting to be near your mother. So is the position with the better pay the one you may not stay with?

I am from Florida too. My mother has already died, but I have 2 sisters in Atlanta. I'm somewhat considering moving up there to be closer. But my only transportation right now is a motorcycle, so the Florida weather is on my side.

I am waiting on the position with the better pay and both jobs are in Atlanta.

What I’ve learned in my years of experience is that we are more loyal to organizations than they are to us. It’s ok to start something and then when something better comes along, to pivot; even if it impacts the organization in a way that they weren’t expecting. If your intentions are pure and you’re not doing it out of spite, you’ll be fine. Nobody has your back like you do so you have to do what you have to do for YOU. Start the position and if you need to quickly resign once the other one comes through then do that. It’s not always easy, trust me I know, but sometimes it’s worth it.

  22. Clarissa McMickens-Thomas

Thank you! I am going to move forward with the plan as this job was to get me back home near my mother. The salary just will not allow me to live the life I have built for myself.

  23. Jen Frischen

Truth. No company is as loyal to us as we are to them. I am finding that true as I go through my own situation right now.

Whether or not you started the DOD job, feel free to resign it if you receive the offer paying $40,000 more.

You need to act in your own best interest and $40,000 is a tremendous pay differential.

    DOD will understand.

  25. Jen Frischen

There is no way anyone would find it unreasonable that you would take a job that would pay you $40k more a year. That's a huge difference. Maybe the cost of living is far different in Georgia, but $40k is $40k.
