Good Morning!

Good Morning!

I’m at a point in my nonprofit career where I’d like to start applying for Executive Director roles.

Any advice on how to connect with nonprofits in a broader way? I’m really well connected in the animal welfare arena but am looking to make a change away from that field.

Thanks!

Do you have fundraising (including grant writing) and management experience? If not, the road to an ED job will be difficult. Your best bet would be to network with your local non-profit advocacy group and possibly some foundations that support your cause. It also helps if you have an MBA or other advanced degree, as the ED role is explicitly focused on the business aspect of the non-profit.

I do! I have over 15 years of leadership experience and have created high performing teams from very broken ones. I have an MS in Nonprofit Management and have secured grants ranging from 25k to 250k as well as donations from 1k to 1.5mm.

In my experience, it's beneficial for those in ED roles to have a deep knowledge of the organization's specific area of interest. While you may want a change, if you really want to move up to leading an organization, it might be better if you remain in the animal welfare space.

I would start networking and serving on other boards (where there is no conflict) you need that visibility and network because it's an inside job getting some of these positions.
