Navigating competitive workplaces

Navigating competitive workplaces

I always knew the team I'm on had an element of competition, but sheesh! I did not realize how bad it really is sometimes. Over the last few months, I've discovered that some colleagues who I thought were good eggs go behind your back on projects without looping you in or just outright withholding important information to your detriment. There are also alliances within the team among long-time colleagues that often come into play. Even in conversations, one person will say, "Oh yes, please loop in Jenny on that project. She and I go way back. We're good friends." It almost feels thuggish.

They'll also praise each other's work but say nothing when someone they're not friends with does something impressive or completes a major project. Newer employees like myself go unacknowledged.

So, at this point, my first instinct is to follow suit, keep my mouth shut, and be helpful only to those who are kind and honest and reciprocate. I'll share info when I have to. I don't want to be taken advantage of by people who are not supportive or leave out important details that I need to succeed. I had no idea this office was such a minefield, and in some cases, the mines are set by the teammates two cubicles down.

If this sounds familiar to you, how have you survived in a place like this? When I was first hired, I was told that everyone works well together and strives to be inclusive. I was encouraged to get in touch with lots of colleagues and always cc them when necessary.

Apparently, not everyone follows suit.

Yes. Very familiar. I NEVER work as a Team player. I am a rockstar on a Team. I support my Team by being highly capable and dependable. But I toot my own horn. I rope in the leadership outside my Team when I send out my summaries on progress or tasks in support of broader initiatives. I routinely send out my "updates" praising my accomplishments without naming names. Others in my group offer accolades for my work because they are falling in line with the path I have led them on. My boss same thing. No one wants to fall out of favor and because I have established a voice for myself that includes a broader audience, no one wants to not mention me. It's Elevation by Association.

So this is how politics work in my current international company and my past 2 companies. I use finese and hide my bragging well. I learned from the best and I am not afraid to pretend to be humble. I also strategically call out others for praise as it serves my purpose.

Is it ridiculous? Yes! But I have not been caught in layoffs or passed up for promotions since the 90s. I learned these added "soft skills " as a means of survival and financial growth. As I see it......if I didn't employ this mindset I would be the only loser.

So give us an example of what you do to never be a team player, because you then say how you support your team in the very next statement and I'm confused as to what you actually mean here.
