I have been working for a year at a law firm, i was told i will get nothing less that R6K but since I've started working i was actually getting half of the amount as my salary. There is no contract in place, just verbal agreement. Tried asking for it and i was told that there's no law that says it is a must for contract to be in black n white. I let it go, down the line 2 months passed without getting paid amd when i asked i was told the firm does not generate money. Is it fair, judging that my position is not commission based? I still perform my duties everyday still not getting paid, i have then stopped going to work because i have no transport money or rather money to pay rent and buy food, people no longer want to borrow me money due to not paying it back, i still owe people even now and still not received my two months salary or any sort of communication from the director of the company. What can i do? I am busy applying but i can't even secure an interview

So you aren't actually getting paid? You had no offer letter nothing? Did you do all the payroll paperwork, etc.?

This is what they call getting compensated on collectible billables. It’s a horrible way to pay or not pay someone. If the client doesn’t pay them, they don’t pay you. Many smaller firms have shifted to this model along with commission only. Which is crazy to me. I’ve been a lawyer for 20 years and am stunned by this shift. In the mean time sign up for Posse List and do some doc review - low money is better than no money.

So if you are not being paid at all, you have a choice...you contact your supervisor in writing as to what you were told verbally what was agreed to as the salary OR....find another job position.

    Look at https://careers.csaa-insurance.aaa.com

p.s. "people no longer want to borrow me money due to not paying it back".

YOU borrow money, people LEND you money.

I don't quite get it. Are you an employee (W2) or a contractor (1099, assuming you are in the US)? You need to find another position ASAP. Contact the Department of Labor (or Labor Board) for the process to file a claim for unpaid wages (again, assuming you are in the US), as this process varies depending on the state where you live. Working for someone without a contract or offer letter in place is risky, and depending on your industry and location, the ways to recoup unpaid wages can be long, tedious, and potentially more expensive than it is worth. In the US, you have more rights and leverage if you are an employee (W2) than a contractor.

Where do you live? In some countries it is illegal to not pay you.
