What industry are you applying to?

Graphic design jobs are often lumped into user experience design roles these days, so I'm not sure if you are going that route or are you purely looking for marketing /advertisement roles. Or, are you looking to get into visual design work for like gaming industry/entertainment?

Since you're new to the career world (welcome), have you looked at creative apprenticeships or fellowships? I would consider those paths as well. Sometimes, when you graduate out of those programs, it can help place you in active job. I'd also still consider paid internships too, as long as you meet that company's eligibility.

    Good luck to you!

These days, I rarely read about graphics design jobs. Most of these jobs are now called USER EXPEREINNCE or UX jobs. Employers want experienced UX folks these days. Another hot topic is videography. I see a lot of those jobs especially those tied in with SEO and content production. I would try non profits. I would also be aware that some companies are going the AI route these days. In fact, I just had a job interview with a company that had done just that. Lots of AI videos and AI images. TOO BAD, the vast majority of that was NOT selling.......You get what you pay for in some cases That is the message that UX and videographers need to be making today......

    Hi Jack!

I've been in tech and graphic design for decades. Generally speaking, employers want you to be able to do more than just graphic design - they're looking for you to also code or do proofing for printed materials.

Take some time to consider where you want your career to go and look at job postings for those positions. The minimum qualifications are things you want to get started on learning now. The "nice to have"s should follow closely behind.

By looking at job listings for the job you want to have in 5 or 10 years, you build a professional roadmap for yourself and also get a good idea of what the industry expects of you. Bear in mind that these expectations will shift in 5 to 10 years, but you'll still be moving in the right direction.
