During this holiday season, I would like to post something optimistic.

During this holiday season, I would like to post something optimistic. I am an almost 65 year old (2/26) licensed clinical social worker who also has lived experience with mental illness. In March 2024 I took a step down from a job where I was a supervisor in which I was underpaid and overworked to accept a job as a staff psychotherapist at an outpatient group practice I'd never heard of. This turned out to be the best move I ever made. This company is incredibly thoughtful and supportive to its employees in so many ways. They value experience. I was promoted in September 2024 to Team Lead and at the end of January 2026 I start a new role as Psychotherapy Supervisor. I get recruited on Linkedin at least once a week and I'm so happy at this job I won't even consider interviewing anywhere else. I intend on staying with this firm as long as my mind and my body (my job is hybrid - I commute into NYC twice a week) are able. I interviewed with a lot of outpatient practices, psychiatric hospitals and even behavioral divisions of managed care organizations before I got this job so it was an arduous process. I cried when I didn't get what I thought was the "perfect job." Keep the faith everyone and the path to that dream job may not be as you envision it. Happy and Healthy Holidays.

Thank you for sharing this! I am 58 and work in accounting. I'm studying for the CPA after decades of hurdles. My life was derailed by a psychopath in 1994 and I lost all rights as a mother by marrying him. I could not leave until 18 years later when he could no longer use my children against me. His mother always said she could take them and I feared losing them. I barely knew him and was just dating him when he assaulted me and forced pregnancy. I didn't understand at the time that it was a trap and there was no help at the time for people in my situation. Everyone said I should marry him, but in doing so I lost my rights. I've been free for 13 years and rebuilding my life from scratch. Ageism is real. I am not going to retire anytime soon because I can't. I am currently working in a toxic environment searching, for something better. Your story is so encouraging. Thank you for sharing!

I too want to post something encouraging. I am 68 and found my forever job (for at least 2 more years when I plan to retire - if all things remain constant). I am a tech support analyst and work fully remote. I was laid off when I turned 60 and worked several contract jobs, took unemployment during covid shutdown, then found this position 4 years ago. Tenure is celebrated here, I only wish I would have found them sooner.

Congratulations to you! I am so grateful you were able to find a path to healing for yourself to help healing others. Us social workers need to support each other but we’re typically underpaid, overworked, and because most of us accept this, the cycle continues and we can’t show up for our patients the way we want to. Not only that but the NYC commute is so exhausting!

happy holidays and all the best wishes for 2026!

Thanks for the great story. It is excellent to leave a place for something better.

I did something similar, and it worked out great. Better than I ever imagined. And a position from home, with an excellent supervisor.
