My boss has previously been very encouraging and responded positively to my work.
Having taken on a new role themselves now, they’re very unsupportive and critical of me. They’ve taken me to HR regarding things I wasn’t even aware of as issues. It’s demoralizing and despite my best efforts, the criticism continues to roll in without any constructive suggestions for improvement. I don’t know how to resolve and it feels like they’ve just given up on me. While I am far from perfect, good leadership should look better than this, right?

I would pull that person aside and see what is really behind the shift. Perhaps they are failing in their new role and they are looking for a punching bag. Behind the scenes they may not want to come back if they are failing and need to make waves about the why. Definitely speak to HR and ask for documentation about this in case it may affect you in terms of any upcoming company reductions. Ask HR for support and if there is a need for corrective action put together a written plan with HR to get through this.

Yes, good leadership should make you feel aware of what you need to be doing, what you are falling down on, and what you are doing right. Having said that, if they're not telling you how to improve, there's a simple fix: ask them.
