What is the typical time period a candidate should expect to hear back after a first interview? I sent my thank you the day after so the ball is in their court. I'm still moving forward in my job search, but what's the expectation these days? 1 week? 2 weeks? Grateful for whatever the community can share-thank you!

I would suggest pinging after a week (longer if there are holidays involved). There may be reasons why the process takes awhile. HR may be dragging things out to see if either more candidates apply or they are waiting on another candidate to decide. HR in the company can also be slow in general responding.

It really depends on the time frame and competing priorities of the company that is doing the hiring and the scope of their search. As a general rule, recruiting processes are typically longer for more senior jobs.

There are really no firm answers, but I’d venture to guess 2-3 weeks is fairly standard for management jobs.

If you want to check back with the hiring team, I’d suggest doing so no more frequently than every 10 days or 2 weeks — unless the company has suggested that you check back earlier.

What did they say when you asked about the timeline in your last interview?

We ended on the recruiter wanting to go back to the c suite to see whether or not they could raise the salary range. It's okay if the answer is no. I would just appreciate an update :).

No info about the timeline? I would follow up in a week and half - short email to check in, reiterate you're very interested and asking for timing of next steps.

    Thanks, JW!

It used to be 1 week but now anything goes. If you haven't heard back in 2 weeks I would reach out.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really a typical time. I’ve heard back from employers for a 1st or 2nd interview request anywhere from 3 days to 6 months after I applied for a job or completed a 1st interview (respectively).

All you can do is apply to a job and then run off to apply to another one. Don’t get too attached to any particular job until you’ve landed a job offer, and you’ve gotten your first paycheck (job letter is no longer a guarantee of a job). No use waiting on any of these places to get back to you.

If you don't hear back from them in a week, follow up with the recruiter and anyone who gave you their contact information. Say you are still interested, and ask when you might hear back from them. It doesn't hurt to let them know you are continuing your search so that they can prioritize their response if you are a top candidate.
