Remote Work: Freedom or Career Risk?

Remote Work: Freedom or Career Risk?

Remote work has given many of us flexibility we never had before—but I’ve also heard concerns that it may impact visibility and career growth, especially for women.

Being physically present in the office sometimes leads to more recognition, networking, and promotions.

So I’m curious—

Do you feel remote work has helped your career, or held you back?

Would love to hear real experiences ?

Remote work has tremendously helped me career. There is ONE employer in my industry locally, and it is a very small company. After about 8 years I felt like I was ready to move on to something bigger to grow my career, and I was able to jump on the remote work bandwagon in 2023 before all companies wanted everyone to start coming back into office or work a hybrid schedule. My entire team is remote from different areas of the country, and since we were hired remote, the hybrid changes didn't affect us. In the past 3 years at my company, I have double what my salary was when I left my previous employer, and I have gotten 3 promotions.

I think career growth in a remote environment can be harder and require more effort to put yourself out there, but a big factor is the company itself. Since almost all of my division is remote, we are at a level playing field. A mix of in-office and remote would require remote employees to put in extra effort to be seen.

Why are you asking all of these random questions soliciting other people’s experience? Are you doing research for something? I see in one of them you have outright advertised your business but I don’t know what you expect to get from these unless you’re pretending to be engaged so you can slip in the ads.

Its helped me tremendously. I choose flexibility and focus on projects and those successes have led me to focus on building a reputation rather than a career . I attract work and the money that is attached to that work based on my reputation and the success of my last project. I don't look for carer moves but rather projects I'm interested in along with a bigger payday. I work remote because I see it as a non-negotiable.

Remote work has added a layer of flexibility to my résumé and the interviewing process. Employers often appreciate seeing how diverse and adaptable a person’s work experience can be. However, based on my own experience, remote work also comes with health risks, such as sitting in one position for long periods of time, and communication challenges. Interacting with coworkers online can bring challenges, feeling similar to social media, where misunderstandings can easily occur.
