Hoping to gain insights and ideas....

I have been unemployed since early February and having a really hard time finding a new role in my field. It's been discouraging, and I am losing hope.

I have been looking into finding temporary on-call gigs such as event staff or similar to at least bring in some income. I hesitate to go restaurant or retail route because I'd need to quit once I find a full-time job, and that doesn't seem fair to put those employers in that situation.

Hoping that there may be others who were in similar situations that were able to do something temporarily until they were able to find a full-time job. Could you share any tips or experiences?

Thank you all so much!!

It's not your problem to solve the restaurant or retail location's staffing issues if you'd leave. I also worked at a restaurant during a period of unemployment and I made a ton of money there. I hustled, to be clear, but it was WAY more than an hourly rate at a retail location. Preserve your savings and lessen the financial blow of being unemployed.

The food service industry is used to temporary employees. When you hire on, politely check. Many students do this as a side job. They know the drill.

To add to the comments below - I wouldn't worry so much about joining and then quitting a restaurant. They'll find someone to replace you, no worries there. Neither the restaurant, nor indeed any other employer, really cares about you.

Look after yourself, first and foremost. Take care of your own financial needs. The days of pleading loyalty to an employer are long gone.
