I would like to receive your opinions please. Employee is asked to meet with the owner and manager to discuss the employee's raise. During the meeting the owner stated the employee's salary was more than the manager, who was in the room and gave permission to the owner to divulge, but also stated the salary was more than another employee who was not in the room or aware of the meeting. Is this appropriate or the new norm?

    Sounds odd to me.

Not appropriate but I'm not sure you can do anything about it.

i find it unprofessional. They can simply say the employee is above the salary band. There is no need to

specifically call out the manager or other peer in that way.

It’s very unprofessional to tell someone what someone else makes in my opinion. That should all be private. I had a boss tell the company cleaner what I made and hour when she wanted more money. I was pissed to say the least. It’s never anyone’s business what you make. Especially someone that is no where even close to be qualified to do your job. Heck she wasn’t even qualified to do her job.

As a business owner myself, I don't what to say......The owner

of this business is not only wacky but also acting very unprofessionally. 1) You have a manager whom you are paying to handle raises/annual reviews with employees 2) Divulging anyone else's salary to an employee is CRAZY! 3) Having some sort of sit-down where you attempt to gaslight an employee about a raise is silly! Any employee worth 2 cents is going to suspect that the manager and owner are giving them some sort of bunko number! GROW UP FOLKS!

Very unprofessional and unethical. Many private companies feel they can do what they want and treat people like trash.

Clearly they want to share pay transparency which IMHO is a good thing. If the employee is expecting much more the company is setting the tone that they are already over the top of the scale and there is nowhere else to go. If the employee is dissatisfied with this then they need to work elsewhere to get more money. Is this the norm not necessarily but kudos to them for sharing truth so that the information shared can affect the employee in the way that they can openly process this. Often an IC (individual contributor) can make more than a manager whose role is to drive others but not necessarily stay technically sharp in their day to day role.

transparency is sharing the salary in the job description and/or salary per role type or tier. Privacy violation is when you disclose salary of several employees without their consent.
