Has anyone else found the job market pretty much non-responsive if yoive worked for many years with 15+ years experience? Is it that the job market is slow or has anyone found ageism or recruiters ghosting you when you give them your resume, even if your resume is optimized by resume and ATS experts? I have! Just curious as I’ve always had offers after 3 applications, yet over the last year I’ve not received but 1-2 interviews after 100s of applications and resumes sent/applied for?

My situation exactly. I'm getting discouraged.

It’s a whole different world than it used to be. It’s not necessarily ageism, although you always want to keep your eyes open for all types of discrimination. My 24-year-old son put in hundreds and hundreds of applications for every interview he got.

Spend one day on LinkedIn and you’ll get an accurate view of the job world right now. Numerous industries have been doing mass layoffs. Everyone from outdoor retailers to tech to everything in between. So depending on your industry you could literally be up against 100’s of other qualified candidates. Also a lot of the resume writers have no experience and just use AI. I would make sure you have numbers and hard data on your resume of your accomplishments. Use key words from job postings. YouTube has a wealth of knowledge from people who have been recruiters forever. They give tips on everything from resumes to interviews. Network network network. It’s not what you know but who you know. I have an incredible network that we’re rooting for me and actively looking and it still took 5 months to get a job. You have to hustle big time these days. Good luck!

Offers after 3 applications? You’ve been extremely fortunate!

Yes, ageism exists and hiring has slowed. Keep plugging, though!

It is not currently a candidate’s market due to the economy and many large scale layoffs happening.

Also “optimized” resumes are often not that great unless you’re working with someone who has recruitment or targeted industry experience. There’s no “ATS bot” to get around.

Most companies cannot afford someone who is over qualified in this market. It’s less about ageism and more about saving money.
