Difficult CFO

Difficult CFO

I work with a CFO who can be extremely difficult. He gives off the impression that he is smarter and more valuable than I am. In the past, when I was pregnant, he was upset with me over something, and when I tried to figure out what it was and apologize for it, he was condescending and rude and made it painful to work with him. Once I returned from maternity leave, things seemed to be on the mend (but not great. I have another example where I have tried to implement managers to check in with their employees, but he never did it. Yet when he went to a manager training and was told to do it, he began implementing it. I asked him about it and he gave me an answer of, "When you send emails to a group of people, I don't read them." Basically, anytime I try to do something and ask for his involvement - even individually!- he tells me no.)

However, it's not just me who has encountered issues. The Marketing director feels isolated from him and refuses to speak with him. She has tried in the past, but he comes off as cold, and she can't deal with his negative energy.

Then recently, during evals, he received a raise and requested more for some work he has done in the past year. When his manager gave him some additional money with a bonus (but not at the amount that the CFO requested) he told his manager he would think about it and has avoided him since.

Now I am asked to speak with the CFO but I have never dreaded speaking to another colleague as much as this one in my entire career. Any advice on this?

Sounds like he has not only been empowered to behave this way but believes he calls the shots. Tread lightly because someone at the top has his back.

Bring a peer who is his equal with you. Do not meet with him alone. Have a clear vision of what you need/want to say and remain professional.
