Awkward

Awkward

I have been in my current role for about a year. Recently, there was some restructuring, and I have been fortunate enough to be added to the cabinet. I am the only person of my title level to have been extended an invite, everyone else holds more senior positions than I do.

Although I have only attended two of these meetings so far, my boss has done the same thing in both sessions. That is, he calls out and to an extent talks trash about a colleague of my same title level, often stating that this person and the department that they lead, 'Doesn't think it has to do what everyone else is doing', and 'When they get busy, they seem to think they don't have to take on anything else.'

While I agree that this appears to be true based on my experience working with this person and their department, the awkward part is that up until this restructuring, my boss was this person's supervisor. So, whenever my boss makes these statements in the cabinet, I can't help but think, 'Whose fault is that?'.

I obviously will not engage my boss about this. However, it makes me think about what he could be saying about me to others when I'm not in the room.

I would suggest you let your work speak for you and not worry about if or what your boss does or doesn't do. He is who he is and worrying about his drama won't prevent or change anything. If you deliver impeccable work and remain prepared you are doing all you can to set yourself apart.

    Hello!

I imagine it's frustrating to hear your boss trash talk a former employee under him. I can also imagine it's awkward being with a group whom you perceive are of higher positions than yourself. But you were invited for a reason!

If you're familiar with the department and the situation, perhaps this is an opportunity for you to offer up suggestions on how they could improve on these perceived flaws. Or, you could offer up explanations based off your experience.

As uncomfortable as it may be, it's likely inevitable a boss will talk about their employee(s). While you may not be able to control what he says about others, sharing your valuable insights can certainly give him and others something to think about when he speaks up.

It's a subset of leadership, usually the real decision makers within an organization.
