   Always be humble. I'm very confident. It's also part of my personality to be confident, humble, and admit to mistakes. Always remember, if the decision you make backfires, that's okay, make another decision. Be humble and always admit to learning. Be open, not closed off. But know your stuff and speak up if you want to be heard. The loudest in the room is not the most confident. The person that can get the attention because they are respected shows confidence.

   A series of small or modest wins over time.

   Ask lots of questions at the beginning. Learn as much as you can about the job and company and industry. Use or create process maps to understand if necessary. Knowledge will help build confidence.

   I once interviewed for a position at Twitter (way before Elon). They didn’t hire me, and, because I’d been unemployed for around 3 months at that point, I asked for any feedback the recruiter could give me.

   He said: “I don’t really have feedback - it’s more advice, really. Your resume is fantastic; it’s laid out well and it’s informative. You have a great personality. I really enjoyed chatting with you. But.. you’re nervous. And it showed. I understand that interviews are hard, but! I want you to remember: I called YOU. I received well over 1,000 applications for this role, and your resume made the top ten. YOU are the expert. I want you to own that moving forward.”

   It stuck with me, because goddamn it, he was right, I AM the expert. I always have a lot to learn, but, you know what? I’m really good at my job and I should act like it. It’s really helped me.
