I'm really struggling with job searching.

I feel like I've tried everything and I don't know what else to do. I've edited my resume a handful of times, staffing agencies have ghosted me, I've applied to well over 1500 jobs, and I've tried networking - but to no avail. No matter what I've tried, nothing is working. I'm a graphic designer and not only can I not get a job in my field, but I've applied to at least 15 different retail stores local to my area and I'm either getting no response or rejection emails. It's been 21 months, and I'm frustrated, exhausted, and burnt out. What can I do? Please help.

I empathize with how you are feeling. The market is extremely competitive with prospective employers wanting more for less or counting you out as "over qualified." At this point it certainly is not you. However, have you considered temping to hire? Or even consulting? This would get your foot in the door, paid and put you within view for consideration. While also allowing you to determine if the job is a good fit. And for what it's worth, when it seems like all of the doors are being closed in your face, it is because the one special door that checks all of your boxes, and then some, is waiting/being prepared just for you. I bid you well wishes in your successful job/career find and look forward to your post about your prosperity.

I have heard this from any in the field. Can you join one of these new services that provide you as more of a freelancer while you are waiting for some turn in the market? Much like traditional temp work, the opportunity to showcase your work for different companies could land you something permanent.

I just shared the same comment on another post. This seems to be similar to experienced that others are noting here and what I’ve heard out in the world.

Because my job search was so horrendous a few years ago, I hired a resume writer and job coach the first job out of the gate this time. She spent hours tailoring my résumé line by line exactly to match the job. She told me that it wasn’t enough to have a “relevant” résumé. It had to be an exact résumé and that we would be doing this for every. single. job. That means minimum of five hours per job/application! Yikes! Luckily for me, I’m only interested in the one job at this point but based on her experience at that rate, I’d be able to apply for one job per week.

With so many people looking these days, online systems are like open cattle calls, and it takes a lot to breakthrough to actual humans on the other side.

Try Creative Circle, its a staffing agency but its an awesome foot in the door for different companies. Its how I got my first full time job as a Graphic Designer. Good Luck!

Are you using LinkedIn? I never thought it would work, but in my last search I updated my profile and set it to open for opportunities, something like that. Basically the job I have now found me and is the best company I’ve ever been.

I've used LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, my university's alumni page, Handshake, Robert Half, Creative Circle, Insight Global, Aquent, Monster, and more job boards I can't remember. I've tried them all.

I have heard from a number of job seekers who have applied to hundreds of jobs with no success (I am one of them). You aren't doing anything wrong, and it's not your fault. It's a tough job market right now. No matter how well you interview, how much you network, how great your resume is, how excellent your LinkedIn profile is, it is still possible not to get hired. I wish I could give you a magic formula that would get you (and I) hired, but I don't know of one. All you can do is keep trying. Best of luck to you.

Hello, I’m an experienced graphic designer as well, with UX/UI. I’ve never seen the market so dead in this sector, ever. I’ve also upskilled, edited the resume multiple times, tweaked LI repeatedly, continue to network, etc., etc. No solid results. Looking in other areas as well, but not much success. Too many people needing to shift their job hunt, too much competition, too many low paying jobs that people can’t afford to take, not enough solid opportunities. Seems you have to have a personal “hook” to get into any decent job. Curiously my friend in Amsterdam said they are experiencing something similar. Frustrating, running up big credit card debt, but hoping what goes down must eventually come up. Best of luck to you
